In a segment on his show, John Oliver gives an excellent, amusing, and a little NSFW, overview of the net neutrality situation. He invited all internet commenters to go to FCC.gov/comments. The site seems to be overwhelmed since this aired.
There is another way! The FCC has established an email inbox for commenting on the issue of Net Neutrality.
Here is the comment I sent.
I urge you to designate Common Carrier status for a truly open internet. Many of my friends and community members in this rural area depend on fast internet connections to maintain their small business. These “mom and pop” businesses don’t have the financial leeway to pay extra to ensure the fastest connections, nor should they need to.
As for my family and neighbors we are left with few options, while there is high speed cable internet mere miles from here the telephone and cable companies don’t think it is worth their while to bring the internet close to every home. Therefore a slow satellite connection or an expensive (and limited) mobile broadband modem are the only options. The thought that we will be paying more for even less access is horrifying. The U.S. is already too far behind the rest of the developed nations on this issue. Just as we needed the Rural Electrification Act to bring a basic utility to everyone, it is time for a Rural Broadband Act to bring today's essential utility to all parts of the country.
Definition of equal: Uniform in application or effect; without discrimination on any grounds. Not “fast and faster”; not“here or there”. Fast, Everywhere.
Thank you.
