Received this e-mail today from 350.org:
Governor Jerry Brown thinks fracking has no impact on California or Californians -- but we know a some folks in the Central Valley that disagree.
Take Kern County, for instance: It has 246 of the 249 wells that have been disclosed this year -- as well as the worst air quality in the nation and highly elevated rates of cancer and respiratory illness.1 Residents of Kern County have invited Governor Brown to come see the impacts of fracking for himself, and we're urging him to take them up on the offer. Will you help?

For Kern County residents, fracking means an explosion of oil field traffic, methane flares, pipelines, and wastewater pits filled with secret chemical cocktails. Fracking for more oil also contributes to climate change, and climate impacts are hitting their home in the Central Valley hard.

Last month, the Energy Information Administration officially cut its estimate of the amount of "technically recoverable" oil in the Monterey Shale -- which runs under much of Central California -- by ninety-six percent. That means that using current techniques, a LOT less oil can be extracted than everyone was banking on. It means that fracking ≠ the economic boom that Governor Brown was hoping for.
But fracking does still worsen climate change and impact the health of communities in the Central Valley. And without a ban on fracking, you can bet that Big Oil is going to be doing all they can to get at the rest of that oil, using ever more extreme techniques. Fracking 2.0 is the last thing California needs.
The only people who think fracking is safe are those who haven't seen it. If Governor Brown allows fracking to continue without seeing the impacts himself, he will deliberately be walking blindfolded into a health and climate disaster.
This weekend, Kern County residents will hold a press conference publicly calling on the Governor to meet with them. You can help by adding your voice and helping to spread the video online.
