A day care center in Texas is under investigation after they were accused of and admitted to duct taping their young charges to sleeping mats if they wouldn’t take naps.
An employee at Heart2Heart Montessori Academy was bothered by with the way he or she saw other staff members treat some of the children and secretly began documenting the issues. In one photo, a boy can be seen taped to his sleeping mat with his arms, chest and legs pinned down.
In the ultimate “I quit” story, the whistleblower sent the photos to the parents and promptly left the day care.
Since I'm most impressed by the methods of Montessori Schools I doubt this is wide spread. But more about the corporate culture, and red states adherence to "you are on your own" regulation.
I can understand that children are unruly and sentient enough to be a pain in this lock step culture. But if they don't want to take a nap is it really better to use toxic tape on them and force the other nappers to try and sleep through their cries? As a Montessori School the practice was to let the non nappers do quiet activity while the others slept. So why are these children being forced into a nap?
Disclosure: my daughter attended Montessori day care for a time. It was the only school she has never balked at attending.
