I'm wondering whether you all know this variation on the old folktale of stone soup: that when everyone comes together to contribute their own ingredient, in the end a delicious and nourishing repast is created for all.
That's what I'm hoping to do, metaphorically speaking, through these Michigan/Motor City Kossacks Open Thread diaries. It's experimental, and every week will be necessarily different from every other, depending on what WE ALL put in to it. But we can certainly use it as a forum to share our local news and make connections, whether near or far, around the state.
I'd like to aim for a 6:00 PM post on Wednesday evenings; how does that sound to you? By no means would I like to be the only one posting! Please let me know when you'd like to be the official host, and I'll put you on the calendar (to be posted weekly).
The good thing about an Open Thread is that anything is fair game for adding, as long as it's in the interest of promoting community across the state.
I was lucky enough to receive a whole long list of suggestions from someone I hope will be in the comment thread, because tonight I can't actually stay to tend this diary: I have a family emergency unfolding, and can't promise I'll have any good connection all night.
But I can at least get things started.
Please check out the diary I posted a few minutes ago: Detroit People's Water Board Welcomes Canadian Help--Rally on Th 7/24, 3:30 PM, @ Spirit of Detroit
I realize it's very late notice, and it's quite likely people have other obligations already. But if you can attend, please do. It's partly theater, which is of course a good thing, but it's also an opportunity to demonstrate solidarity. And the speakers will be great.
In the comments, I'm expecting folks to add links about how to contribute to the People's Water Fund. As for myself, I have to skedaddle.
I look forward to stopping in when I can to read what you all have to say. Thanks so much for stopping by and adding news about what's happening in your corner of the state! (or finger of the mitten?;)
