August Recap
August began with that most innocuous of postings - a Mark Fiore video/
diary about the Israel/Palestine conflict, which noted that the topic was off limits on the Front Page. It was a good video, but that got lost in the highest of high dudgeon that Markos would ever do Such A Thing as to not devote the resources of the site to that area. Never mind that there have been no less (and usually more) than four I/P diaries on the Reclist at any given time in the last two weeks.
My attention was taken up for the next week with following the evitable debates on GMOs, multiple definitions of science, why Science Is Good and anything else can be considered as junk before its majesty. Sometime during this, we strategically bombed in Iraq, pictures of the devastation in Gaza blanketed a number of diaries, and the Israel/Palestine diary fights seemed to be running out of steam for the time being. Maybe everyone who could be insulted, had been?
And, on the eleventh, Robin Williams was found dead;suicide is suspected. Seventeen diaries between 6 pm and midnight may not be a record, but it's on track for one, surely, I knew I loved his work, but I had not known how many others here did also. A belated Rest In Peace from me....
8/13: No pie, quite a bit of meta, and Ferguson, Missouri has,for the moment, pushed both Israel and Iraq (and almost everything else) off the Recommended List.
8/20: Not quite all Ferguson, all the time, but close enough. It's been attracting a more nuanced class of trolls, and I expect a spike in Hide Rates - and a spike in comments that actually end up hidden, which is not the case for pie fights. TimeOuts and BOJO are taking longer to implement, last week and this - I picture a badly sleep-deprived admin staff trying to set up the DK5 beta amongst all this real outrage, and wishing for some sort of instant cloning process....
8/21 - Ferguson was quiet last night. I could tell, because this morning there was another chip-on-its-shoulder I/P diary up, trying to see how many combatants it could attract. (well, two, but the second one was by a newer user, so it collected the HRs) (Okay, three, but this one is actually worth looking at.)
8/24 - As Ferguson winds down, in it's wake we are seeing some really good work on White Privilege. So far, this diary and this one are worth a second look. On the geologic side, Iceland seems well worth watching, and if you haven't seen them I recommend all of rei's diaries, beginning with this one from 8/17. Today the Bay Area seems to be wincing in sympathy.
8/28-30 - one meltdown, four diaries (one deleted), one BOJO'd long term user, two meta followups - 'nuff said. Er, and one great advice diary, and one not so bad at all feminist offering/fine rant. Expect at least a trickle more to follow in the next few days - maybe even by me.
8/31 One sorry attempt to try to link a GBCW (GoodBye Cruel World) flameout diary to the previous banning. I think it must be the Labor Day weekend/end of summer that is triggering previously simmering pots to boil over. It can't be the moon - the last full moon was on August 10th, and there's no data for insanity during an increasing quarter moon that I know of. And Bárðarbunga has settled down slightly. Or it could be that there's only two more months for things to shake out before the elections...
8/31 - evening - well, Bárðarbunga has unsettled, and there's another long, slow flameout in progress. I'm feeling like I'm watching one of the row-of-dominos-falling setups. Tonight I get to count HRs for the month, and there's definitely going to be another slight blip...
Whew. It's September. Uh, oh...

Terminology
PIE/PIE FIGHT:Daily Kos centric term for a flame war, kerfluffle, knock down drag out mess, etc..
MOJO: the Daily Kos ranking system, a secret algorithm for determining status. Frequently gamed by users who think they've figured out the algorithm, with varying success.
BOJO: Bony MOJO, named after the skull and crossbones which appears below a banned username.
TU Status: Trusted User Status, which confers the dubious pleasure of a) being able to read the comments which have been Hidden by other TUs, and b) being able to participate in community moderation(yay!) and/or pie fights(boo!) by giving out
HRs (Hide Rates, also known as donuts or hydrates).
Tip Jar: A tip jar is an automatic first comment added to all diaries which appear on the Recent list - a custom tip jar can be substituted by the diarist, but it will be, by definition, the first comment in a regular diary. Diaries that are posted directly to the Front Page (the left column on the direct Daily Kos main page) do not include a Tip Jar.
Recs: Recommends. These come in two flavors: diary recommends and comment recommends. Note: All the Rec numbers in this diary are
comment recommends, which are the upside of HRs. Diary recommends are in addition to comment/Tip Jar recommends and should not be confused for statistical purposes.
