This is a series of diaries highlighting animal rescues around the country and noting and celebrating the work they do to help animals who have no voices but ours to speak for them. I have decided to make this a daily series because there are so many wonderful rescues out there who need human help and weekly just doesn't seem to be enough. I have long wanted to start a rescue but lack the resources or time available to do so right now so this is my attempt to do my part. Today's rescue is another close to where I live. I hope that these rescues will benefit from the kindness and benevolence of the community here at Daily Kos. They are amazing organizations and worthy of Kossack attention and care.
Now that I'm home, bathed, settled and fed
All nicely tucked into my warm new bed
I'd like to open my baggage
Lest I forget
There is so much to carry-
So much to regret. Hmmmm…..
Yes, there it is, right on the top.
Let's unpack Loneliness, Heartache and Loss
And there by my bed, hide Fear and Shame
As I look on these things I tried hard to leave
I still have to unpack my baggage called Pain
I love them, the others, the ones who left me
But I was not good enough - For they did not want me.
Will you add to my baggage?
Or will you help me unpack?
Or will you just look at my things -
And take me right back?
Do you have the time to help me unpack?
To put away my baggage
And never repack?
I pray that you do - I'm so tired you see
But I do come with baggage -
Will you still want me?

How You Can Help
Do you know a needy animal who needs a good home?
On a space-available basis, the CDHA takes in animals who are unwanted, abandoned, unable to be kept by their owners or otherwise needy. And these animals are kept for an unlimited time at no charge to the former owner until a home is found.
We need you! The Capital District Humane Association is a volunteer organization. It is not subsidized by any governmental agency but depends entirely upon fund-raisers and donations.
If you care about animals as we do, please help us by donating money or time to our cause. State employees, please donate to us through the SEFA campaign. Our ID# is 50-00070.
Support of CDHA by bequest, trust, or endowment provides vital resources to ensure the Association's continued fight for animal welfare. If you are interested in further information, please contact CDHA or consult with your attorney.
If you wish to make a donation, want more information about CDHA or wish to volunteer, please e-mail us, write or call.
CDHA welcomes anyone interested in volunteering their time with adoption clinics and fund-raisers. Foster homes are always needed as well to accommodate the number of pets who need temporary homes before they are permanently adopted. Please contact us if you are interested or can help in any way.

Sandy's Story
We make happy endings come true: Sandy's Story...
Sandy, a neutered three year old Golden Retriever, had a gentle and loving disposition. And a special problem...which we were able to solve.
Sandy had lost part of his front leg in a train accident. Normally, three-legged dogs have no problem getting around. However, Sandy lost only the part of his leg from the elbow down, and it was not properly mended by a veterinarian. So Sandy kept falling over because he was trying to use the remainder of his injured leg as if it were normal.
In order to adjust to his loss and lead a normal, happy life, Sandy required an operation to remove the remaining portion of his leg. Fortunately, the CDHA found a veterinarian who would perform the operation at the low cost of only $150. However, being funded only by donations, we could not afford even that price. So we publicized Sandy's plight in the Albany Times Union and the Saratogian in Saratoga Springs.
Within a week, we had raised over $2,000 for Sandy! Thanks to the donations of many animal lovers, Sandy had his operation and the CDHA was able to place the rest of the money in "Sandy's Fund" -- a special savings account for Association animals in need of special medical care.
As for Sandy, he was soon placed in a good home with loving owners.
Although Sandy's story had a happy ending, there are many other unfortunate animals desperately in need of help. You can help by making a contribution to Sandy's Fund.
To help us save sick or injured animals in our care, please send a contribution to Sandy's Fund. Please mail your check, made payable to CDHA, Sandy's Fund to the following address:

Duke
Terrier Mix
Size: Medium
Sex: Male
Age: Adult
NOTES:
Duke is a neutered male Terrier mix, approximately 3 years old. Duke would do best in a home with a large fenced yard where he could play. He'd also be good in a home with active people who would give him the exercise a young dog requires. Duke loves children, but would probably do best with just adults.

CDHA Cats for Adoption
Millie
Short Hair Torti
Sex: Female
Age:
NOTES: Millie is a female tortoiseshell. She needs a nice quiet home where she would be treated like a youngish senior citizen. She is about eight years old and she is very sedate. She likes to be petted and to sit next to you as you watch TV. She gets along with other cats but she is not very happy with dogs. She will swat at them when they go through the doorway. (Probably hoping that they won't come back!)
PLEASE CALL:
If you would like to own an honorary member of the "Red Hat Society" please call Beth at 276-6456 or email at mcgrae@rpi.edu.
Shadow

A very quiet and sweet 13 month old boy. He is all black with a little patch of white on his chest. He loves people and other cats. He wags his tail when he is happy and uses his long tail to show his love to people and other kitties. His mother was abandoned near a farm when she was pregnant with Shadow and his siblings. Shadow's siblings were adopted, but both Shadow and his mother Suzie are still looking for a safe and loving home.

Success Stories
"Toby"
About a year ago, CDHA placed a darling Beagle named "Toby" with a family who wanted a nice, family pet. We just received this update from his family:
Dear Jennifer,
I wanted to send you a picture of Toby from our last vacation last week in Vermont. Please enjoy it as well as post it on the "Success Stories" page. Toby (we call him Tobias) has been like a second child to us and a little brother to our son Rohin. We simple cannot imagine life without Tobias. Thank you for bringing Tobias to us and for all the wonderful work you do every day...

Foster Dogs at Rest and Play
"Fostering has many rewards, not the least of which is getting to know the animals' personalities and watching them evolve into confident, loved, and well-adjusted beings. The knowledge we gain from having foster animals in our homes allows us to share much insight with perspective adopters. It all makes for a happy ending and "forever home."
REID and PENNY
"Reid" and "Penny" at rest. What a happy ending this had! We rescued little Reid, the Bichon, from a kill shelter, where he was going to be euthanized due to some guarding issues. With the help of a behaviorist and much love and understanding from his foster mom, Reid turned out to be the perfect gentleman we always knew he was. He's now been adopted, and there are many more to take him place, but boy does him foster mom miss him."
