A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Do YOU have a bucket list?
As I'm aging, and mostly because I had a heart attack at the age of 48 and 10 months back in 2011 (the Widowmaker type, where one generally just falls down dead), I find myself thinking of the future a lot more often.
Not because I'm planning out all of the great things I have left to do. But thinking about the future in a way I never did when I was younger and more carefree - and a lot less up-close and personal with the absolute fact of my impending demise in the not so distant (anymore) future. For the past three years now, I have viewed the future not so much as "The Undiscovered Country", but as the Roads Not Taken and whether or not the off-ramps to them are still open to me - or not.
I haven't actually written myself a Bucket list, but I contemplate the contents of one, should I ever set pen to paper (who's kidding who here, I doubt I have BOTH pen and paper to write on in the same room these days, it's all smart phones and tablets when I need to jot something down). I think about the days I have left a hell of a lot more than I ever think about the days behind lately. Because, I assume, the days left are in increasingly short supply, and thus are more valuable to me now.
What would I add to a Bucket List? To start off, it couldn't be any of the things which I've already managed to actually do, even though I've been a slacker of gigantic proportions over the years:
Travel to a foreign land: I've set foot on a few island nations in the Western Caribbean, Roatan Island which is part of Honduras and Cancun, Mexico. Crazily enough, even though I live a scant five or six hours drive from Canada, I've never been there - but two of my sisters and I plan a trip to Victoria Island in B.C. for the US Thanksgiving week this November.
Have a family/children: I have two living children, and one which I lost early due to an ectopic pregnancy. They make my life worth living nowadays. Truly.
Have an adventure: The day after I graduated high school, I took to the open road with my then boyfriend and eventual husband, and landed 400 miles away, where we lived in a communal house for four months. It was completely outside the scope of my rather sheltered white-bread life up until that moment. I learned to make butter there, buying whole unpasteurized milk from a dairy, where you drove up and went into the open barn, opened the oldest fridge ever manufactured and still operating (in the year 1979) got your giant glass bottle of four gallons of milk and left your money in a label-free big metal can nailed to a six inch by six inch wooden support beam. Then you took it home, let it sit for an hour so that the jostled bottle would stabilize and the cream would again rise to the top. Scoop off the cream, put it in a Mason Jar with a bit of salt, and shake it gently for at least a couple of hours. Put it on the table and in the morning? Butter.
Find the LOVE of my life: The scourge of modern life is that we cannot seem to keep them once we find them, or at least it seems that way to me. I know only one couple who ever truly found THE ONE then got married and stayed HAPPILY married until one of them died. My auntie Patsy and uncle Dick. We lived in WA State and they lived in Wisconsin in a small town near Madison called Oregon, WI. Uncle Dick always called Aunt Patsy "Lover", and not in a sexy sort of way - but in a loving sort of way. You could hear the love in his voice, even after decades and decades. They never had any children, I wonder now if that made all the difference in their relationship? Me? I found the love of my life, but he turned out to be an alcoholic who could not leave the alcohol, and so he had to leave me in the end. He absolutely ruined me for anyone else, and by that, I mean that since he left, I've been single by choice. It's been 15 years now. I still dream of him occasionally, and when I wake the entire day goes by in a blur of sadness. I could call his mother and find out where he is, and I think about that from time to time, but it would literally break my heart to call and find out that he's dead now, from the booze. So I stick to my sad dreams.
So tell me, Lovers, Adventurers and Dreamers - Do you have a bucket list of things which you haven't done, places you've never been and long to see and walk upon the soil of? Tell me about them. Perhaps you'll encourage me to finally write a Bucket List of my own.
REMEMBER everyone: Election Day is only 54 days away! If you know anyone you even THINK might not be registered to vote? Ask them.
Plain and simple: Are you registered to vote? If not, please, let me help you get registered. You know, your Vote is YOUR VOICE in our Government Of the People, By the People and For the People. Don't be silent.

by ZenTrainer ♥ for Nashville KosKats
August 16th, the KosKats met up at the lake at Shipwreck Cove; Patrick is Lucky, Zen Trainer, Mr. and Ms. Sow Hat and 2 red county anonymous dems.
From Zen Trainer:
The Democrats aren’t even trying here. We talked about how to get someone with some sense in here running our state party. I had a name in mind - Mary Mancini.
[...] The other thing we talked about is Moral Mondays. I’d like to really concentrate on getting our legislature to force our Governor to accept expanded Medicaid for our state. I need big time help for that. Most of the KosKats who came to this meet-up don’t live in Nashville, they are on the outskirts. So we need some more local KosKats to step up.

The Kosacadia Kossacks (rsmpdx, winglion, loggersbrat & Sara R) got together at their local Food Truck pod. by John Crapper ♥ for Seattle and Puget Sound Kossacks
Excerpts from John Crapper:
[...] Within minutes of my first conversation with Penny GC she said it best. "You know, I feel like I already know you from your posts and comments. Do you know what I mean?" And I immediately nodded my head feeling exactly the same way. That is the beauty of the Kossack experience!
[...] Finally, I gave each an assignment. I am a teacher you know so it's in my DNA. I asked each person to recruit one person in their circle of friends to become a Kossack and join Seattle & Puget Sound Kossacks. It's this simple. [...]
Thanks, Mr. Crapper for this excellent organizing of Seattle. We have big hopes for mobilizing all of Washington. So great of you to be on board here in the beginning with such an important metropolitan area.

Last Sunday, Silicon Valley Kossacks had their first meet up right in the hub of Downtown San Jose, where plutocrats, technocrats, and college students gather over local brew. The patio of Gordon Biersch was the setting of our open air meeting that would give cause to our newly formed group and inspire us to reach out to voters about progressive candidates and policies.
[...] If you live in the 17th, 18th, or 19th district, please join Silicon Valley Kossacks. If you are not a Daily Kos user but would like to work with us, please make a user account and leave us a comment below. You can follow our group by clicking on the ♥ at the top of the page.

by susans ♥ for Los Angeles Kossacks
More than 30 Kossacks from Southern California met in Los Angeles to strategize on organizing. California is going to be our first roll-out of organizing an entire state. navajo talked about the importance of having a group in each congressional district and how important it is for everyone in attendance to help by looking for potential members in the comments of each diary at Dkos. navajo also talked about using the latest tools available from HQ such as Chris Bower's Action Team's email list and Faith Gardner and Jen Hayden's facebook interface to send invites to potential members in So Cal to join in. navajo will coordinate this. Google groups for email list servs were recommended along with facebook pages set up for each district as an organizing strategy.
Meteor Blades, a precinct captain for more than two decades, reinforced the effectiveness of old-fashioned, low-budget, face-to-face, boots on the ground local organizing as a time honored way to make things happen.
Vyan spoke about how politics is personal and one has to take on that mantle to engage and influence others.
by benamery21 ♥ for Los Angeles Kossacks
After attending the 8/9 L.A. Kossacks meetup in Los Angeles, I wish to extend my sincere thanks to navajo, Meteor Blades, Vyan, susans, Shockwave, and everyone else who played a part in making the meetup a success. I am excited to be a small part of efforts to build Kossack groups in greater Los Angeles, and in all 435 congressional districts.
[...] If we vote, we win. Sometimes asking is all it takes.
[...] but don't forget there is also a lot of other electoral territory in SoCal where your help might mean the difference between a Democrat and a Republican.
