Ol' Meloncalves may be in trouble.
Meet Democrat Jim Mowrer, easily one of the hero candidates of the 2014 cycle. Why? Well, first he's a Fighting Dem, one of the many candidates Daily Kos has endorsed who served in Iraq and/or Afghanistan. Second, he's running as a real Democrat in a red district, Iowa's Fourth District. Third, he's taking on Rep. Steve King. You know King—the guy who regularly competes with Rep. Louis Gohmert to see who can most effectively combine bigotry, stupidity and flat-out crazy in his public pronouncements. Like
this one:
Forty-seven percent. That number just keeps coming up, doesn't it? A Loras College poll released this week has the always-nasty Rep. Steve King at that magic mark in his re-election bid:
Steve King (R, Incumbent) 47.3 percent
Jim Mowrer (D) 36.0 percent
Undecided/Refused 16.7 percent
That's both good news and bad news, of course. The good news is that the House's most virulent anti-immigrant voice is under 50 percent in his re-election bid, which shows that even
his district is getting pretty fed up with hosting the poster child for xenophobic, conspiracy-laced rhetoric. That's a terrible showing for an incumbent. He's also seen
weak fundraising numbers, which could prove even worse.
The bad news is that there's still an eleven point spread between him and Democrat Jim Mowrer, who we here at Daily Kos have endorsed, so there's still a lot of work to do to topple this clown. But dare we hope? A Congress without Michele Bachmann yelling about secret Muslim conspiracies and one without Steve "calves the size of cantaloupes" King holding anti-immigrant hate rallies on nearby lawns?
