Politico took a look at who they project will be the committee chairman in the Senate next year if Republicans win back control of the upper chamber, and the results—as you can see in the above graphic—are exactly what you'd expect.
The only woman in the group also doubles as the closest to being a moderate: Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, who lost the GOP primary in 2010. Murkowski, however, will fit right in on the committee that she's slated to lead, Energy and Natural Resources, where her commitment to burning every last drop of carbon-emitting fossil fuels on the planet will warm Jim Inhofe's heart.
It might seem a bit iffy to put Pat Roberts of Kansas on the chart as a committee chairman since he's in so much trouble in his reelection bid, but if he loses that race, there's also a lower chance that the GOP will hold the 51 seats they need to reclaim control.
It's a similar story with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell—if Republicans retake the Senate, it will probably be in part because he won his re-election battle. And if that happens, while the above senators might the faces of the Senate when it comes to committee work, this will be the face of the Senate as we head into 2016:
Majority Leader Mitch McConnell?
If it happens, it won't be a fun two years, at least in terms of policy coming out of the Senate. But the silver lining is this: It will only be two years. Because no matter what happens in 2014, in 2016,
Democrats will win the majority.
