House Speaker John Boehner
says Congress should weigh in on military strikes in Iraq and Syria:
“I have made it clear that I think the House and the Congress itself should speak,” the speaker said in an exclusive, wide-ranging interview with First Draft.
Hey, good news Mr. Speaker: If you think Congress should debate granting authority to President Obama to continue air strikes against ISIS and Khorason, rumor has it you know somebody who could do something about that. But since you just sent Congress home to campaign through November, I guess you'll have to put the debate over war off until November, when Congress returns after the elections, right?
Wrong:
But Mr. Boehner believes a post-election, lame-duck session is the wrong time for such a weighty decision.
“Doing this with a whole group of members who are on their way out the door, I don’t think that is the right way to handle this,” he said.
Which means:
“I would suggest to you that early next year, assuming that we continue in this effort, there may be that discussion...
Cool. So let's wait until January or February. By then we should have more information about whether the air strikes are achieving their goal, and there's nothing Congress likes more than waiting to take action until they know which way the wind is blowing.
