With the news of Eric Holder's pending resignation, the focus has immediately shifted to who might replace him. Yahoo News is running an article claiming that the top contenders are Donald Verrilli Jr., Kamala Harris, and Sheldon Whitehouse. While all of them have merit, the vast majority of people are going to ask one question first with regard to any of them.
"Who the hell is [insert name here]?"
My proposal: Jennifer Granholm.
1. She won statewide elections 3 times back when Michigan was a much more purple state than it is today. Attorney General (ding!) in 1998, and the Governorship in 2002 and 2006.
2. Her name recognition is much higher than any of the other three contenders mentioned above.
3. She spent a LOT of time as Michigan governor fighting with a Republican legislature.
4. She was an active player in both the 2008 and 2012 Obama campaigns. Time for some payback.
She might not be the most progressive Democrat out there, but I feel this would be a good choice. It will have been 18 years for Debbie Stabenow when her term runs up in 2018, maybe she leaves and Granholm, having been US Attorney General from 2014-16, has the resume to step into that role?
I could speculate for days, feel free to sound off in the comments. Thanks for reading!
EDIT: thanks to markthshark for bringing up this 2012 Democratic Convention speech in the comments.
