Monthly Stats and DK Glossary (work in progress) are below the curvy orange thingy
September Recap
Hard to write about endings rather than beginnings, but we ushered in the month with a loud and messy flameout and banning. And several diaries saying "NO MORE META!" (I disagree, of course.)
The DK5 platform upgrade has still not made it to Beta Testing, and there's barely enough time to run the testing before the November elections at this point. I wouldn't want to be a programmer on staff for this site, but I wish them all the best of luck - or possibly an executive decision to wait until December to test the platform?
9/4 - Kos announced yesterday that DK5 will likely be implemented after the election. In other news, Bárðarbunga is going it's merry way, and - oh, I forgot, we are at what appears to be the tail end of a religious pie fight of sorts, triggered by an incredibly silly comment in a diary quibbling about the historical verifiability of Jesus. So far only one participant, the originator, seems to have taken any major damage, (187 Hide Rates and a Time Out is major damage, yes? Mojo down to 2 bars at present.) It at least put a temporary end to the diaries on banning meta. ;)
9/6 - I'm almost afraid to type this - the meta seems to be taking a break today. Shhh, don't wake anything...
9/10 - The situation with Ray Rice and the NFL has brought several diarists out to argue. Evidently physical abuse doesn't bring up quite the same overwhelming response that rape does, or possibly the fact that no one was killed in the run up to the story going viral makes a difference. Or perhaps it's simply that abuse of power and privilege is so thoroughly ensconced in our culture at such a low level that the arguments always appear to get incredibly complex if you allow them at all. Hmm, maybe there's a diary in that...
9/12 - The 9/11 diaries felt somehow softened this year. Perhaps it's that we seem to be shifting, once again, into pro-military mode because of the execution-by-beheading videos of two American journalists. Perhaps because it's incredibly hard to handle the dissonance that comes from watching/sharing the demand for justice/vengeance against ISIL while still trying to promote peaceful solutions in the Mideast.
9/14 - bastrop published the first section of a piece on gaslighting - both a definition and some basic techniques and tells, and I for one am looking forward to the rest.
9/18 - Elections, elections, elections - and bombing ISIS. Meta? What meta? A minor spam explosion in the last couple of days in the comments - thanks again, Scoop and despaminate2000 - which suggests that there's a new crop of underpaid college students trying to earn a few extra bucks now that the semester has gotten started.
9/21 - Ah, pie! And meta. Nom, nom... Twigg went after celebrity victim blaming comments, and then, on the very same day, someone had the unutterable gall to stand up for Barack Obama. In other news, over 300,000 people turned out in New York for the People's Climate March.
More elections...
9/30 - And a delicious bit of pie and meta to end the month with a complementary pair of black and white diaries.
The BOJO Breakdown
This is both in response to a
comment by CwV in August's Recap diary, and a
comment of mine on the general question of the overabundance of meta at the end of August.
Between 9/1/13 and 9/1/14 there were 28,490 commenters (including Tip Jars). Of those, 2,300 are now BOJO. Those break down as follows:
Less than 25 comments: 2,174 of ~21,000 - 10.4%
25-99 comments: 41 of ~1,500 - 2.7%
100 - 999 comments: 55 of 3,027 - 1.8%
1,000 - 9,999 comments: 20 of 2,079 - 1%
10,000 comments and above: 9 of 848 - 1%
One of the likely reasons for the amount of kerfluffle that tends to rage around bannings of long term active users is that they happen so seldom.

Terminology
PIE/PIE FIGHT: Daily Kos centric term for a flame war, kerfluffle, knock down drag out mess, etc..
MOJO: the Daily Kos ranking system, a secret algorithm for determining status. Frequently gamed by users who think they've figured out the algorithm, with varying success.
BOJO: Bony MOJO, named after the skull and crossbones which appears below a banned username.
TU Status: Trusted User Status, which confers the dubious pleasure of a) being able to read the comments which have been Hidden by other TUs, and b) being able to participate in community moderation(yay!) and/or pie fights(boo!) by giving out HRs (Hide Rates, also known as donuts or hydrates).
Tip Jar: A tip jar is an automatic first comment added to all diaries which appear on the Recent list - a custom tip jar can be substituted by the diarist, but it will be, by definition, the first comment in a regular diary. Diaries that are posted directly to the Front Page (the left column on the direct Daily Kos main page) do not include a Tip Jar.
Recs: Recommends. These come in two flavors: diary recommends and comment recommends. Note: All the Rec numbers in this diary are comment recommends, which are the upside of HRs. Diary recommends are in addition to comment/Tip Jar recommends and should not be confused for statistical purposes.

High Impact Diaries series is in order - I should have included it before.
