When the Pentagon released its latest assessment of climate change's threat to national security, it was quite specific as to the challenges the military will face. Severe weather conditions could be a "Threat Multiplier" when battling current threats like terrorism and the spread of infectious diseases. Considering the myriad of issues the military will be called upon for emergency management in worse case scenarios, it should give one cause for pause.
Climate change predictions show food shortages, access to fresh water and other resources will present major issues. Billions affected will demand governments provide adequate and equitable distribution of basic human services. However, when dwindling resources can no longer keep pace with population growth, global conflict is the predicted result.
If you're wondering what the hell does a climate change doomsday scenario have to do with allowing Ebola to ravage the planet, here's your answer. Whether the climate heats to a boil or not, all of the above will begin to occur within 25-30 years anyway. Frankly speaking, its over population that'll breed more terror and disease, while over consumption and over development will deplete critical life sustaining resources. Ebola or some reasonable facsimile could offer a solution.
If one looks at Ebola or any other pandemic-like threat as nature's way of saying there's too many people on the planet and some of you have to go, why should we argue with the truth. BTW, please be advised, this is not a pitch to forgo research for cures, treatments and vaccines, as that would be foolish. We're only suggesting one shouldn't be too quick to provide said cures, treatments and vaccines to the masses just yet. We say let nature thin out the herd a bit. When the global population has been reduced to sustainable levels, only then do you introduce the miracle.
Actually, population reduction by whatever means necessary, is also the solution to the climate change problem. Fewer people in the world, means fewer cars on the roads, fewer cars on the road, means less reliance on fossil fuels, less reliance on fossil fuels, means less carbon monoxide emissions in the atmosphere, less carbon monoxide in the atmosphere means a reduction of greenhouse gases, a reduction of greenhouse gases, means a reduction in global warming. Simple stuff when you think it through!
Bottom line: Letting Ebola run its course could save the planet. While many may view this proposed solution as hardhearted and insensitive, others will see the value it will bring to the survivors. When there's a scarcity of anything, its value increases exponentially. People are no different.
Imagine what you'd be worth if employers had to fight each other for your labor. Imagine how much harder doctors would work to keep you alive in the event of a tragic accident. Imagine how much more people would value life and the lives of others when they realize those lives were finally worth more than a dime a dozen. Imagine that!
