Every so often you see school shootings in gun-crazy America. I know that there are liberals and gun-control crowd want to change the laws regarding access to guns, as it is far too easy for those who should not have guns to get them. This is an admirable goal, but ultimately one that will not stem the gun-related violence.
(I know that I write few diaries, but I had to find a way to express my feelings.)
This is not about gun control, which I do agree with more than not. This is about those that will (have already) predictably scream about more and more guns, getting rid of gun free zones, arming teachers, et el.
They scream that by arming teachers (and some students) the teacher will be able prevent this from happening. As if any person who is capable of shooting a gun will think clearly when they are faced with a shooter. Those people that have been in fights can often attest to this, experience is absolutely required to learn how to think in a situation where time is of the essence. I highly doubt that most teachers have that experience. Even if they do have that experience (former Marines and soldiers), I highly doubt they have ever been in a firefight where there are students between them and the shooter. How would a parent react to a child that was killed in the crossfire, especially if that child is hit by the armed teacher?
The gun nuts also, for whatever delusional reason, believe that school shooters choose schools that are "gun free zones." They ignore the fact that most of them have a connection to the school they victimize. They fail to acknowledge that more often than not the shooter, ultimately turns their gun on themselves. The shooters seem to rarely intend to walk away alive in the aftermath, why would they? They are cowards. Why, if suicide is the escape these shooters take would the thought of someone shooting them deter them from doing what they do? These school shooters, for whatever reason, have gotten to the point where they devalue life, including their own. On a side note, it should come as no surprise that the same people who think that armed teachers will be a deterrent are the same ones that agree with the death penalty as a deterrent. How has that one worked out ending horrible crimes?
The gun nuts ultimately contend that it is the "Democrat Party," socialists, "libtards," President Obama, and whatever group wants to limit guns going to everyone as wanting to take away their 2nd Amendment Rights. These people, generally, have no problems with the ending of every other right that we maintain in our society. Cracking down on whistleblowers, and the reporters who they leak to? That is a matter of national security. Free Speech zones? I have never heard a justification on the right about this, they just seem to ignore this one. Spying on American citizens? Who cares? "If you did nothing wrong, you have nothing to fear." Due processless killing of Americans? Who cares? If you side with the Islamo-facists, you deserve to die. Attempting to take away an entire communities right to vote? We have to stop "voter fraud." There are so many other things I can list here, but I don't have the time, energy, patience, or recollection of the all the rights that the gun nuts don't believe are as important as their right to bear arms.
I know that there are many other things I could put in this diary. I am writing this as a vent. I was stupid enough to read the disgusting commentary of the latest shooting in Marysville, WA. (on a side note, I have two nephews who are students in that school district, fortunately, neither are in high school)
I also know that Republicans are the ones who will push this line of shit, but we have to acknowledge that there are Democrats who are also "gun supporters." We have to convince "gun rights" crazies that guns make murder far too easy. Violence has always been a part of humanity, but the gun has allowed individuals to run amok and destroy so many families, communities, and most of all individuals. And while I am not convinced that gun control will work in this country (there are far too many), we need to do something to end gun violence. More gun violence is not going to cut it.
I wish I had an answer to this...but I don't. This problem is so much bigger than any one person, we need to fix it as a country.
If there are any additional, appropriate tags I missed, please add them. As I said before I rarely write diaries.
