The Westboro Baptist Church has filed a motion to intervene in the federal marriage equality case out of Kansas. In their brief they state that the Kansas AG cannot represent their interests adequately, so they must be allowed to intervene. Of course, the motion is likely to be denied. I suspect that the judge will allow them to file an amicus brief, however. As one would expect, the brief has a number of Bible quotes along with the WBC's interpretation of the story of Sodom and Gomorrah.
From the brief:
WBC is an independent Bible-believing church located in Topeka, Kansas (since 1955), which has had a highly conspicuous public testimony against the proud ruinous sins of this generation; including a nearly 25-year street ministry, engaging the state, nation and world in a robust debate about its policies of sin, and the consequence of such pervasive proud sin to the country and its people. Throughout its years of picketing, WBC has warned Kansas that the sin of homosexuality, and particularly same sex marriage, will bring great woe and harm to this state. Today the number one moral issue facing this nation is same sex marriage. WBC has a vital interest in what the courts rule regarding this issue, as it directly impacts their religious practices, beliefs, preachments, picketing, association and speech, as well as the wellbeing of their fellow man.
Kansas is part of the Tenth Circuit, which has already ruled in favor of marriage equality. So, it's just a matter of time before marriage equality comes to Kansas, whether WBC likes it or not. And, probably sooner rather than later.
