We all suffered an emotional blow on Tuesday. At times like this, it is important to remember the good things around us, large and small. Actually, practicing thankfulness is a healthy thing under any circumstance. And here we are, in harvest season, a traditional time to be thankful for what one has.
I have a lot to be thankful for. I am thankful for my sister, our home, friends, food on the table, healthcare. I am also thankful for the furbabies in our home. Their company gives us such pleasure. I know we are not alone in our thankfulness for our animal companions -- so tonight, as an exercise in thankfulness, why not do a pet roll call?
Here are our babies.
Dusty
Dusty is Ann's cat. She's ten or eleven years old now and is the longest cat resident in our household.
Goldie
Goldie is our chief quilt inspector. She's about ten years old and was adopted from the Cat Adoption Team almost eight years ago, together with Boots. Goldie is an "abby tabby" (part Abyssinian) and tends to be a butterball.
Boots
We adopted Boots together with Goldie about eight years ago (they were "cell" mates at the Cat Adoption Team, sharing a cage). She is about half a year younger than Goldie. Boots was picked up by C.A.T. as a street kitten and she has always been a little shy. That being said, she is also very playful and sweet.
Betty
We adopted Betty from the County shelter about three years ago. She may be about eleven years old but we are not sure. She must have had a hard life before because the fur around her muzzle and bridge of her nose has been scarred away, we think from years of eating out of cans that had sharp edges. She has a lively personality and loves to sit in my lap. I have a weakness for Basement Cats...what can I say? We are worried about Betty's health, presently. She has become hyperthyroid and is having kidney issues.
Leaf
We adopted Leaf from a fellow Kossack who was homeless and could not afford to keep her. She's a lovely Calico, very soft and snuggly. She loves to sit in your lap. We honestly were not looking for a fifth cat but she is such a darling, we are glad she is with us. I just took this picture as I am writing this...she's keeping me company as I blog.
We also have four backyard hens, all named after divas of the silver screen: Barbara Stanwyck, Katherine Hepburn, Mae West, and Ginger Rogers.
Please share your pets with us, if you have any, and give thanks for anything else that comes to mind. Oh! One more thing... I am grateful for:
Smileycreek!
She is a bright light no matter how dark it seems around us...and today is her birthday! Please wish her a happy day and year ahead. Smileycreek, may you enjoy happiness, good health, prosperity, and every good thing! Love you, my friend!
Portland roses for smileycreek!

Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with kossacks who are caring and supportive of one another. So bring your stories, jokes, photos, funny pics, music, and interesting videos, as well as links—including quotations—to diaries, news stories, and books that you think this community would appreciate. Readers may notice that most who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but newcomers should not feel excluded. We welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well.
