President Obama announced this day that he will use executive action to create comprehensive immigration reform. He will save families, keep families together, keep Americans in America working and paying taxes. He will stop the horror of having parents split from their kids by deportation.
Hopefully we will never again see Latino kids by themselves seeking asylum and trying to escape drug cartels being greeted at the border by thugs in cowboy hats screaming at them and drowning them with hatred.
On another issue I saw tonight that my great friends at the
Coalition of Immokalee Workers, including Greg Asbed, who've been organizing farm workers in South Florida just released a documentary called
"Food Chains." The doc exposes the poverty and suffering of farm workers, especially tomato pickers. Super celebrity Eva Longoria Executive Produced the film. I watched her talking about the awful wages and living conditions in South Florida.
I was blessed to work with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers and Greg over the years. They are great organizers and I tried to help when I could. I was so proud the day the Coalition of Immokalee Workers signed a corporate agreement in the office of Sen. Bernie Sanders.
I was blessed to bring AFL-CIO President John Sweeney to Immokalee to join with others for action on the ground–a speech, a radio show, a Catholic Mass, and media interviews.
But let me be clear Greg Asbed and the Coalition of Immokalee Workers have won what they’ve won by organizing and mobilizing farm workers, digging in and never giving up. Through their efforts, they’ve forced giant corporations to pay more so immigrant workers could live just a bit better. We could all learn a lot from their work.
