Took advantage of a brief period of non-rain (who thought I'd be typing that phrase again in my lifetime!) to plant the 20 new Asian lily bulbs I'd ordered in the early Fall. Like "Bonbini."
Tuesday! A day to look at plant catalogs . . . and dream of fragrant Summer flowers.
As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group gives Kossacks a safe place to check in, a daily diary where we can let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, earthquakes, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It also allows us to find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, earthquakes etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a Kosmail and ask to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!
We do have a diary schedule. But, when you are ready to write that diary, either post in thread or send FloridaSNMOM a Kosmail with the date. If you need someone to fill in, ditto. FloridaSNMOM is here on and off through the day usually from around 9:30 or 10 am eastern to around 11 pm eastern.

I have been an enthusiast of Asian lilies for some years now and every late Summer or early Fall I order another selection from B & D Lilies. Then I wait until the weather gets cooler and wetter to plant the new ones near the established ones. Lately the "wetter" time just hasn't arrived, so I wait for cooler weather. But this late Fall is very different here in the Bay Area, as you know. We haz RAIN!! So I needed a window of no-rain to plant the new additions to my dormant lily bulb beds. And today was it.
"Bonbini" is going to be gorgeous come next July. The name has (IMO) a funny provenance:
Flower Description: The word ‘Bonbini’ means "welcome" in Papiamiento. The language itself more describes this flower than “welcome” does. A crazy mix of words from the Arawak Indian dialect, Spanish, Dutch, along with a confusing mixture of African dialects with a little Portuguese, English, and a smidgen of French thrown in, makes for one crazy language, almost as crazy as this ‘Bonbini’ and its crazy color combination. Crazy yes, but it all works!
This is a very striking as well as attention grabbing lily to say the least. The delicate pink tracing outlining or "halo" in the center of each petal tends to fade in hot, direct sun. In our cool, NW climate, it has held up in full sun to light afternoon shade. In the warmer states, it is best planted in dappled sun throughout the day or light afternoon shade. 3 to 4 Feet and taller. July Flowering. Fragrant.
So, nearing the Holidays, is your garden sleeping? Still active? Don't have a garden?
