There was a previous diary on this incident, but it seems to be flying a bit under the holiday radar, so it’s worth reading this updated account in the Washington Post.

I know incidents like this are becoming an almost daily occurrence, but this one is still particularly stunning. It’s hard to know what to say about it. I’m thinking mainly of a two-year old boy who is starting his life with a burden that most of us could scarcely imagine.
What was this woman thinking? What drives people to take a loaded deadly weapon to, of all places, a Wal-Mart in rural Idaho? What could she possibly be afraid of? I’m sure there are few if any scary racial minorities in the area. Was she scared of her fellow gun fetishists? (Hmm, maybe there’s a point there) .
I have lived most of my life in major cities and I have never felt the need to carry a gun. What makes a 29-year old mother think she has to pack heat while shopping at Wal-Mart in Idaho? It staggers the imagination.
What’s truly striking is the reaction of the family, who are in complete denial about how gun fetishism led directly to this horrible incident.
The gun culture is a cancer on our society. The recent cop-related incidents all boil down to one thing if you ask me – it’s all about America’s “shoot first, ask questions later” mentality that pervades everything, including law enforcement. The NRA and its enablers are the ones who truly have blood on their hands.
