The Daily Bucket is a regular feature of the Backyard Science group. It is a place to note any observations you have made of the world around you. Rain, sun, wind...insects, birds, flowers...meteorites, rocks...seasonal changes...all are worthy additions to the bucket. Please let us know what is going on around you in a comment. Include, as close as is comfortable for you, where you are located. Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the patterns that are quietly unwinding around us.
No Bucket today so far so here's a late one with an assortment of driftwood I saw on my recent trip out to the ocean a few days ago. It's open ocean along the Olympic peninsula shoreline, so there are gigantic waves in winter, bringing in big and small, fresh and well-eroded, and always wonderfully shaped and colored remains of trees that live in the maritime Pacific Northwest. Enjoy the flotsam.
I did a Bucket two years ago with explanation of how driftwood gets to the coast. If you check out the photos there, you may recognize a few of the pieces I've included below since I beachwalk this coastline every year. Some driftwood is so massive it stays embedded in the sand for years, gradually eroding more and more, often rearranged in position by occasional monstrous wave action.

As always, please share your observations of the natural world in your neighborhood below in the comments.
