Lena Baker was the last woman Georgia executed. That was 70 years ago. Baker was a black maid who shot her employer who had threatened her with an iron bar if she left. She shot him, reported the killing immediately and was convicted by an all-white jury in a one-day trial presided over by a judge who always kept two pistols in plain sight on the judicial bench. No blacks could serve on juries at the time because of Jim Crow laws keeping them from voting. Baker was unconditionally pardoned in 2005.

In Anchorage, Alaska's largest city, officials tried and failed in December to ban a new commercial marijuana industry. But Police Chief Mark Mew said his officers will be strictly enforcing the public smoking ban. He even warned people against smoking on their porches if they live next to a park. Other officials are still discussing a proposed cultivation ban for the wild Kenai Peninsula. But far to the north, in North Pole, smoking outdoors on private property will be OK as long as it doesn't create a nuisance, officials there said.

BiZoHa Orphanage, which bills itself as "the world's first atheist orphanage," has launched a crowdfunding campaign. Its aim is to build a deliberately godless safe haven for homeless children in Kasese, Uganda. The proposed orphanage will offer refuge to children, most of whom have lost their parents to AIDS, and will become part of the broader science-based Kasese Humanist Primary School (KHPS). The secular-themed KHPS is already aligned with Foundation Beyond Belief and Atheist Alliance International, and has garnered acclaim from renowned atheists. Its new atheist orphanage will be located near the Rwenzori Mountains and the Congo border. The crowdsourcing campaign is seeking start-up funds of approximately $4,500—that amount will fund the construction of a home for 15-20 orphans, provide it with furniture, and feed the orphans for one year.
