The three member Clark County Council voted yesterday 2 to 1 to mount " In God We Trust" placards in council chambers.
After 8o speakers voiced their concerns, Counselors Dave Madore and Tom Meilke pushed the vote through despite major opposition. The Chamber was filled to overflow with for/ against running about even.
Counselor Jenne Stewart voted against.
The measure was instigated by out of state lobbyists from the organization "In God We Trust America, based in Bakersfield Calif. The IGWTA has been active all over the country, and is becoming more successful in Blue states. Clark County is a heavily Red county.
The local newspaper, "The Columbian", normally a right wing mouthpiece, was inundated with comments from people aghast of the ruling.
While a local organization know as "Friends of the Carpenter" was approached to fund the manufacture of the placard, nothing was mentioned with regard to funding future legal challenges.
