From the "out of the mouth of babes" file we have this story from BuzzFeed today about a Texas third grader who is demanding marriage equality in a letter to the US Congress. She is nine years old, her name is Maggie, and here is what her letter says:
“Dear Congress,
Would you like it if someone wouldn’t let you get married to a person you loved of your own gender? No. So why are you not letting people do that? That needs to change, and it needs to change now. Would you rather me send letters all year? Or you listen the first time? Your choice.
[Sincerely],
Maggie.”
From
BuzzFeed:
Maggie’s father told BuzzFeed News this isn’t surprising behavior. Her dream is to one day meet President Obama (who she has also written letters to) face-to-face.
He added: “What is surprising to us is the forceful language she chose. She clearly has very strong views about right and wrong, fairness and injustice. And, as she has learned by age 9, sometimes assertive actions are what is needed.”
For Lent each member of the family decided to either add an activity or give something up. Maggie decided she wanted to write one letter a week to advocate for others. “We were very proud of her decision,” her father said.
She should send that letter to the Texas legislature and governor as well.
