A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Do you want a NanoFlowcell Quantino?
In 2010 I bought a used 2005 Subaru Outback XT. That's a turbocharged Outback. They were made for only five years from 2005-2009 and are actually pretty rare. In 2005 the total number produced in the color of my car (pearl white) was 163 which included the non-turbo model as well. In 5 years of production, only approximately 2500 were made plus the specific model I have is even rarer since I have a 5 speed manual transmission. They made more automatic transmission models. There wasn't enough demand for the turbocharged Outback so they stopped making them.
There are a number of reasons I wanted one. First, the mileage my car gets is only one mile per gallon less than the non-turbo model, which in itself is truly amazing. Second, as the car gets older, the turbo keeps it running strong which isn't true for the non-turbo model. The third reason is if I need extra oomph to pass a vehicle or dart quickly to get across traffic, I just push the gas pedal and whoosh! Of course the fact it has asymmetrical all-wheel drive at all times is sweet.
My car has a 2.5-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine. Non-turbo models have 170 hp. My XT, with it's 2.5-liter turbocharged engine, gets 243 hp. They also made a 3.0-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder that gets 245 hp, but the gas mileage is quite a bit worse than my car which gets essentially the same horse power, when needed for short bursts, then it drops back into 170 hp good gas mileage mode.
Another thing about the model I got is it has 17 inch wheels and it's made so you can pop in an STi engine if wanted (that is the strongest turbo engine Subaru makes). I plan on keeping my car going for the long haul. I did recently need to replace the clutch and will likely even replace the engine if that day comes (probably some 100,000 miles down the road).
BUT, I've finally found an all electric vehicle I'd consider getting one day to replace my Subaru. This is really dream land stuff because I really can't imagine ever getting a car for the remainder of my life where I'd have to make monthly payments. But in dream land you can dream anything you want. I present to you the NanoFlowcell Quantino.
This baby goes more than 625 miles between charges, which is nearly double what my Subaru gets on a full tank of gas. It goes 125 miles per hour. It has 22 inch wheels!
It uses a "flow cell" which is a battery that operates like a fuel cell. The electrolytes holding energy are liquids, and power is generated using electrodes and a membrane. It doesn't use lithium ion batteries as does the Telsa and electric Toyota models, so it doesn't have that bad up-front environmental problem getting lithium. It also doesn't have any of the high-infrastructure costs associated with hydrogen power sources.
The inconvenient truth about Telsa models and other cars with "a superior turning radius" that use lithium ion batteries is, once you factor in the up-front carbon footprint, you have to drive them between 80,000 to 100,000 miles before you surpass the the total carbon footprint of the manufacture and pollution created by a mid-sized gasoline engine car. A really disappointing statistic is if you live in an area where electricity is made from coal-burning power plants, a Tesla will actually always cause more overall CO2 emissions than a regular gas burning car. There is no "break even" point in that regard. That's not the fault of the car, it's the fault of electricity made using the dirtiest technology around.
Where I live all electricity is made from hydroelectric plants which cause no emissions. It's really cool to know that all the electricity I use is generated without any CO2 emissions. Well, I'll stop gloating about that now, but I really do like it.
Just look at this thing! Ain't she a beauty? Why yes, pNut, she sure is a beauty.

Koscadia, at it again.
We had a lovely meal together yesterday. The mood was a bit somber as we thought of our absent [Koscadia] friend, Cedwyn. The news of Cedwyn's death did not come until afterwards.
At our lunch, I received a special gift from ericlewis0 intended for both me and Ann, wrapped and framed by llbear. It was the original artwork for the Animal Nuz cartoon of Catwyn receiving her quilt. [Photo can be seen in Sara R's diary]

DKos Asheville's Roadtrip and Two-Day Retreat to Roanoke, Virginia
From randallt:
After seven successful and engaging meet ups, DKos Asheville's core members decided to take our next gathering on the road. The first reason was that our chef and benefactor for all our meet ups has been Gordon20024 and we wanted say thanks by traveling to be with him instead of having him drive to be with us. We asked and he was thrilled and so the idea was born. Another reason is that it offers us the opportunity to meet more Kossacks from around the region including Virginia and parts of North Carolina to the north and east of us.
Grow our network, grow our community, help win elections.
