I don't support Netanyahu, nor do I support settlements.
But can the US support Palestine as an independent state under the rule of Hamas? I don't think that will happen.
Whether the Palestinian people have been oppressed or not, it's another matter. But the fact is that their government is Hamas, which is pretty much a terrorist organization. I'm not sure that Hamas is any better than Al Quada or Islamic State.
When we give aid to Palestinians, that aid ends up in the hands of militant groups. Hamas is more interested in training kids to be fighters than sending them to school. Peace negotiations always take place in Oslo or Jerusalem, because it is too dangerous for Western diplomats to enter Palestine. This guy Abbas, by the way, he is just a powerless figurehead.
So Obama can talk tough about Netanyahu, and discuss recalibrating the relationship. But when you recalibrate a relationship, you should have another relationship to go to. And what exactly is that relationship that Obama is going to?
