The above photos were taken in my garden in the summer of 2007. When we bought our house in 2004, the property had to be stripped to raw earth. The front yard had suffered years of neglect while the back of the property had been covered in concrete. It was hideous. But once we had it down to a blank canvas, we went nuts. Growing up loving to garden and then moving to cramped cities, I could once again get my hands in real soil for the first time in 20 years.
We first set about laying pavers and a beautiful patio. Then we put in our trees and shrubs. And finally we laid flower beds and put sod down in the back garden. In the front of the house, Brian gave me full reign to create the cottage garden I had always dreamed of having. I actually had people stopping their cars to admire it.
Now the landscaping has matured. Our Japanese maples and jacaranda finally provide shade and the shrubs we planted have given the foundation we planned for. Over the years, we began to plant with more drought resistant plants and installed drip irrigation lines. We became smart about water conservation. But even the responsible measures we have taken to minimize our impact to the environment do not rise to the severity of the situation California is in. Reality sucks, but there it is.
I wandered the garden this morning making notes in my head about what we will save. The trees are mature enough now to withstand the drought for a while. The roses we so carefully nurtured along our white picket fence we will try to save as well. A few other drought tolerant plants such as lavender can stick around as long as they aren't making too many demands. The rest we are going to let go.
There is a silver lining to all of this though. Once we put down a selection of different barks and pea gravel etc., it will provide the perfect place for the newest member of our family to romp and play.
Everyone - meet our Sophie who will be coming home in just over three weeks.
Sophie is the red fawn girl that is standing on the breeder's belt at the start of the video. She appears to be the smallest of the litter right now, which is fine with us. We can hardly wait.
