I have been thinking recently -- oh oh that can be dangerous! I am growing uncomfortable watching all the mystery and detective shows on PBS. I have enjoyed many of them for many years, but as a Jewish person, I am tired of Catholic priests.
As somebody who enjoys diversity. I can think of absolutely NO Asian, Buddhist, Jewish, Hindu or other races or religious backgrounds for ANY of the British detectives we have been watching for 40 years. Oh, I just thought of one show that does; Death in Paradise.
And WHY is it that PBS can't come up with an original show based in the US? Miss Marple, Father Brown, Poirot, Sherlock, Dalziel & Pascoe, DCI Banks, Dr. Blake, Rosemary & Thyme, shall I continue? Midsomer murders, Miss Fisher's murders... Now, I am aware that many of these are much-loved books written by British writers... But, surely PBS could hire writers to come up with a MODERN show featuring an eastern Indian detective, as I know there are many Indians in Britain. Or how about a Jewish detective?
Oh and while I am at it, the female scream at the discovery of dead bodies is now a laughable joke, so darn predictable... It's time to retire it once and for al.
Is PBS a sacred cow? They do many other types of shows that are great: NOVA, Nature, American Experience, music shows, so I don't understand why they don't add more FLAVOR to their mystery shows.
Flavor is good! Bland is bad! PLAIN YOGURT IS BORING! Do you like pasta with nothing on it? Or do you add portobello mushrooms, garlic and white sauce with white wine? Do you like white bread with nothing on it? As a kid I balled up a piece of Wonder bread but I outgrew that.
I am simply asking PBS to add some flavor, spices and color to their mystery and detective shows.
