At this very moment I'm sure at least a few of you are scratching your head, thinking "Brillig's writing? How the h-ll did it get to be Tuesday?! Huh? It's still Sunday? Dammit, I need more sleep..." Put on your favorite jammies (this is a family community diary, after all) and follow me below the orange fluffy pillow to talk sleep after a late nite infomercial from our sponsor...
Here at Top Comments we strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
According to the National Sleep Foundation, the vast majority of us over the age of 18 need between 7-9 hours of sleep per night, while those 14-17 would do best with 8-10 hours.
The NSF also lists a set of healthy habits to practice that will help achieve those necessary hours:
Stick to a sleep schedule , even on weekends.
Practice a relaxing bedtime ritual.
Exercise daily.
Evaluate your bedroom to ensure ideal temperature, sound and light.
Sleep on a comfortable mattress and pillows.
Beware of hidden sleep stealers , like alcohol and caffeine.
Turn off electronics before bed.
Here at Top Comments, though, we know that Real Life often means we aren't all identical, and some of us need only a few hours each night while others of us would prefer more sleeping to waking ones! Others of us simply cannot have the Ideal Sleep Situation. Your humble diarist, for example, in general gets 6.5 hours Sunday thru Thursday nights, often an hour or two more on Friday evenings, and then negates that extra with a late Saturday evening's 5 hours. My body has helpfully determined, however, that the Monday-Friday alarm time of 6:30am is also the Time We Wake Up To Check What Time It Is on weekends, holidays, and any day where we don't have to adhere to school schedules. I am NOT a snooze alarm fan, for many of the reasons this video describes:
Because of the way our single-bathroom household works in the morning, my routine is to wake to NPR, make sure K1 gets in the shower on time, and listen until she's out. It's NOT snoozing, just not getting out of bed until I can get into the shower.
My sleep falls outside the recommended "establish a routine" scenario, but my schedule works for me for weeks at a time... and then I have a day or two where I simply MUST have more sleep, almost like a catch-up few days. In fairness, I also admit I do have caffeine nearly every morning, but am NOT a zombie beforehand. Mostly, I like the ritual of morning coffee.
How about you? What sort of sleep do you get each night? Do you have a set sleep routine, or does that 'routine' include passing out from sheer exhaustion at some point? Do you use a snooze alarm, or do you rise-n-shine with the first sound? Has this diary sent you running for the covers? Tell us in the comments!
Sunday or Tuesday or any day, we know what brings you here! Top Comments, Top Mojo and the Picture Quilt, of course!
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
From Yasuragi:
greenbird's comment in Denise Oliver Velez's must-read front page piece today knocked the wind out of me.
From a2nite:
An excellent comment by TarheelDem worthy of a diary really, in Denise Oliver Velez's diary full of good comments.
From leu2500:
Sethtriggs, in his comment in Mark Anderson's diary on Japan's new high speed train, coined the perfect term for today's politicians.
From Yours Truly, brillig:
In Ian Reifowitz's Bobby Jindal advocates unholy alliance of fundamentalists and big business to back discrimination, sidnora has both a comment and an addendum that belong here tonite.
