Legislators are reacting to complaints about bad grades on their first schools report card with a touch of profiling and a good dose of conservative values added to the curriculum.
Among the complaints voiced were schools landing F’s and D’s has a majority of students receiving free or discounted lunch. On the other hand almost 90 percent of the schools that got A’s had less than half of their students in poverty.
A committee from the North Carolina senate suggested adding five principles as mandatory to required American history courses. That topic had been suggested by the American Legislative Exchange Council, the Koch and other major corporation backed conservative group.
Among some of the real conservative zinger Ideas that ALEC wants teachers to be required to teach would be of course strong military defense, the constitutional limitations on government power to tax and spend and the value of paying down the public debt.
In another part of the measure, possibly crafted by an Alex Jones style “Buy gold now” Ad department, they want teachers to discuss “money with intrinsic value” a term that refers to the day when money was backed by gold.
In another section ,there was a not so subtle hit on home schooling the measure requires parents of students that opted out of summer reading camps to explain why.
What can I say at this point ? Spring is in the air and the crazies are out in force again in the old North State...
