UPDATED: this morning to report 6th death, a patient taken to Temple University Hospital.
8 are in critical condition.
Condolences to all of the victims and their families.
Well wishes for the recovery of the injured.
(former) Rep. Patrick J. Murphy (PA) is OK, he has tweeted pictures and comments, but it looks to be very serious as at least one of the cars rolled onto its roof. It happened around 9:30 PM, train 188 from Washington to NYC. It was the NE regional (not an Acela), and although moving through a reduced speed stretch of track north of 30th St. station, all seven cars (and the engine) left the track.

UPDATE: Mayor Nutter is reporting 5 dead.
"We have train cars that are completely overturned, on their side, ripped apart" and 1 car perpendicular to rest of cars, Nutter says
UPDATE: I've found an image from the NYTimes article supporting Mayor Nutter's observations and it's clear that in some cases the damage was simply
not survivable. The steel support structures for the electric overhead wires ripped open one car. Truly horrific.
UPDATE: At least 5 killed in Philly train derailment; 6 critical patients, 40+ others taken to hospitals. 243 total on train

Map of derailment location
Amtrak's Northeast Corridor service will be very limited for several days.
The NYTimes story shows an aerial view of the crash site. It appears likely that the train entered this curve too fast.
