The little town of Pen Argyl, PA, is nestled in the Blue Mountains. Here are some photos from an afternoon walk.
The Daily Bucket is a regular series from the Backyard Science group. Here we talk about Mother Nature in all her glory, especially the parts that live nearby. So let us know (as close as you are comfortable) where you are and what's going on around you. What's the weather like? Seen any interesting plants, bugs or critters? Are there birds at your feeders? Deer, foxes or peahens in your yard? Seen any cool rocks or geological features? Post your observations and notes here. And photos. We like lots of photos. :)
Typical Pennsylvania terrain is hilly and very rocky.
A slate outcropping. At the turn of the century, this area was known as "The Slate Belt", and provided over half of the slate roof tiles used in the US.
A raptor of some sort--too far away and too silhouetted for me to get a good look. Seemed too small to be a Turkey Vulture and I don't see any light colors on the primaries. So I think it is some species of hawk.
Cottontail Rabbit in a backyard.
An ant colony under a log
Caterpillars. I don't think these are Gypsy Moth--it's been two decades since I've seen one, but IIRC they had longer tufts of hair. I am entirely welcome to being corrected though. :)
A butterfly
Another butterfly on a wild Pea plant.
Raspberries
Wild Cherries
Mulberries
Day Lily. With all the food plants, you can see why Pennsylvania has such a dense population of Black Bear.
And now it is your turn--what's up in your neck of the woods? :)
