A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

We all, I think, name the pooties and wozzles and assorted critters with whom we share our lives. But there are other things for which we either must or may choose to provide names. Think about it... Run the set-up on a new computer and you have to name it; I'm not creative on this, but a colleague is always going on about “Martha” having issues. It was confusing for a while. Set up a home network? Name it! As I peruse the list of active wireless networks near our place, among the numerous bland “Qwest4257”s and “Verizon6325”s I can always spot our next-door neighbors' more personalized network-name, as they are huge Minnesota Twins fans (just ask their dog, named for a now-traded pitcher).
Ships and boats all need names, but what about cars? We've always given a name to our automobiles, but that was at the kinder marmot's insistence and was a novelty to me. Our current car is named Djerboa, the Arabic name for the desert rodent pictured to the right, on account of her (are automobiles also always a “she”?) sandy color. The resemblance ends there. Our old car was named Layla, which is Arabic for “night,” again on account of her midnight blue color. We're not alone here, right?
Bueller? Bueller?
While not pets, we've named the pair of chipmunks that live under the porch Alvin and Simon. (Sorry, Ted, but three's a crowd.) Not that we can really tell Alvin and Simon apart, mind you. And not terribly original, as names for chipmunks go. C'est la vie. We've also named the distinctive-looking and somewhat brutish squirrel who gets into our bird-feeder Rocky. Shoulda' saved that one for a raccoon, I suppose.
Oh, and our Route 4 bus—yes, any Route 4 bus—is named Bertie (h/t Wilbert Awdry).
As long as I'm over-sharing, I might as well add that my bicycle is named Sherman. I built that mountain bike by hand about fifteen years ago, slowly adding the precise components to suit the way I ride—unsafe at any speed—and it's built like a [Sherman] tank.
So, don't leave me hanging here.

Announcing Asheville, North Carolina as the location
for our next Regional Event! 9.26.15
Asheville, N.C. is the destination for September 26, 2015! DKos Asheville, the In-Real-Life group under the leadership of randallt, has been setting the example for other IRL groups across the nation regarding registering people to vote, getting out the vote, having a state open thread and setting up strategy conferences for their region. Because of this impressive leadership we've asked randallt to be the State Leader for all of North Carolina. We've got important work to do on the ground there and randallt has shown he's the person to make that happen.
All states are welcome to attend this event and if you do you can expect to meet Markos Moulitsas in person, as well as some of the Daily Kos staff. More details regarding this regional event will be shared in the future so please stay tuned to Connect! Unite! Act!
For now, SAVE THE DATE and spread the word!
navajo maintains the above event list. Kosmail her if you have any diaries
about your event or if you have changes or additions.
EVERYONE is welcome, tell us what you're working on,
share your show and tell, vent, whatever you want.
This is an open thread. Nothing is off topic.
