From wikipedia:
A mondegreen is a mishearing or misinterpretation of a phrase as a result of near-homophony, in a way that gives it a new meaning.
There are any number of mishearing of lyrics from pop songs. The one the pops into my mind is from Credence Clearwater Revival's "Bad Moon Rising," which has a line that sounded to me like:
There's a bathroom on the right.
The line is actually:
There's a bad moon on the rise,
but to a kid who doesn't understand what the lyrics mean anyway, who's to say the first version is wrong?
Probably the most common example of a patriotic mondegreen is from the Pledge of Allegience:
...And to the Republic,
For Richard Stands,
One nation,
In dirigible,
With Liberty and Justice for all.
This of course raises a couple questions: Who is Richard Stands, and how do you get the entire nation in a dirigible?

So this morning, the classical music station was playing interpretations of patriotic songs and anthems. Predictably, one of these was "My Country 'Tis of Thee," and both hubby and I admitted that, as kids, we misinterpreted the same line of that song, but in different ways. The line in question:
Land of the Pilgrims' pride.
As a kid, I heard it as
Land of the Pilgrim's bride.
So apparently, they all came here to get married. Didn't somebody from the
Mayflower get married or something? Isn't that what Longfellow's poem was about?
Hubby, on the other hand, hubby heard it as:
Land that the Pilgrims pried.
Well, everybody knows how hard the Pilgrim's worked to establish their colony. That land was pretty tough, though. They had to pry it apart in order to prepare it for agriculture. Or maybe it was about prying the land away from the Native Americans?
So, did you misunderstand any of the lyrics of any anthems or patriotic songs as a child, or even as an adult? Please embarrass yourself in the comments, below.
