Welcome to North Carolina Open Thread For Sunday, July 5th. This is a new weekly feature of North Carolina Blue. We hope this regular platform will give readers interested in North Carolina politics a place to share their knowledge, insight, inspiration and connections as we work on taking back our state from the extreme, money blinded powers that pull the levers here.
Please join us below and every week as we try to Connect, Unite and Act with our community of North Carolina Daily Kos members.
This was the first Daily Kos weekly open thread for a state. We now have two other states being covered, Washington, by John Clapper and Michigan by peregrine kate. For those in other states, please join us as we strive to establish state open threads in all fifty. Please drop me a line if you are interested in hosting an open thread in your state. Keep in mind, you can create your own State Open Thread group and set up a system and schedule for rotating the weekly contribution.
We have started a State Open Thread group that you can follow to catch the weekly round ups. Scheduling is still in the works but we are striving for an advertised and promoted regular date and time for each of these so readers can depend on a schedule to check out their state's happenings. Please help support and contribute to this project. 3 down, 47 to go
This week's edition is all about the big, hopefully huge, voting rights rally in Winston-Salem, NC.
Are you planning on going to Winston Salem on July 13th? Do you want to go but don't have a ride? Do you need a place to stay? Please use this thread as a way to communicate if needed. We are apparently up to thirty interested Daily Kos members and counting.
DK member DocDawg has been organizing the turnout through a Google group mailing list. Please jump the fold for more information on the event and ways to connect.
First off, in preparation for next Monday's event, we will be treated to a very special broadcast from NC-NAACP.
Monday, July 6th at 7pm: A Special Moral Monday Broadcast of the June 17th, 2015 educational demonstration at the North Carolina General Assembly that led to the arrests of 10 people. Includes special footage of Moral Monday architect, Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, learning about the massacre of 9 people at a historic black church in Charleston, SC just moments after being released from jail.

The North Carolina NAACP has stated:
We call on justice-loving people from across the country and the world to join us in Winston-Salem on July 13 to defend our voting rights. This case is important not just for North Carolina but for all 50 states. Press conference starts at 8 a.m. in front of the U.S. District Court. See flyer for details.
Denise Oliver Valez has an excellent diary from last week.
The Winston-Salem Chronicle has an interesting look at the upcoming rally, questioning whether or not the city is ready.
Who would have thought that a federal judge would move a historic lawsuit to Winston-Salem to be heard on July 13?
History is coming to Winston-Salem, in the courts and on the streets, on July 13. As of the date on this Chronicle edition, there is less than two weeks before that date. The state NAACP reminds everyone that on July 13, the federal court trial of N.C NAACP v. McCrory will be heard. It is the voting rights case against Governor McCrory and North Carolina’s “voter suppression law.”
The state NAACP said this law is the first and the worst since the Shelby v. Holder decision, which gutted the voting rights across the nation. The N.C. NAACP has been vocal about preparing for that date. The Winston-Salem Branch of the NAACP has joined in the planning with other local organizations. The Ministers’ Conference of Winston-Salem and Vicinity, social action groups affiliated with churches, Democracy NC and other organizations are organizing.
The trial is expected to take four weeks.
