This story was on Huffpost two days ago, and The Guardian has picked it up as well. My local news site al.com also has it, albeit with a long stream of racist comments at the bottom that are better off avoided.
Attorneys for family of Jonathan Sanders say state medical examiners found he died through homicide by manual asphyxiation
The small town wherein this occurred is Stonewall, MS which is named after Confederate General Stonewall Jackson.
Sanders, who trained horses and was often seen riding around in a horse-drawn buggy, was at a gas station with one of his animals at about 10 p.m. Wednesday when he saw an altercation between Herrington and another white man, whom Sanders knew. According to Lawrence, Sanders approached them and asked Herrington to leave the other man alone.
A witness told the attorneys that after Sanders left, Herrington allegedly said, "I'm gonna get that n****r."
huffpost
Sanders, who was 39, repeatedly told Stonewall police officer Kevin Herrington “I can’t breathe”, according to one witness.
So far, the local police dept and state investigators will not respond to comment. They are likely circling the wagons and aligning their accounts and preparing a defense for the officer, although with enough public scrutiny, they may be forced to indict this killer cop.
The killer cop is current on paid leave according to huffpost.According to al.com, however, he is on unpaid leave.
from al.com--
Mitchell said the case would be presented to a Clarke County grand jury, possibly as early as September, but maybe later. He said he has presented fewer than 15 cases involving a death caused by law enforcement to a grand jury during his 28 years as district attorney of four counties, and can't recall an officer ever being indicted.
There is no shame to these police murders. One line really stands out:
One of the witnesses, who works as a correctional officer in Stonewall, came out to confront Herrington, allegedly asking the officer to let Sanders go.
The cop continued to apply the chokehold, in front of multiple witnesses, because he was so enraged that not even the presence of witnesses would stop him from continuing his violent assault. Hopefully a cameraphone recording surfaces.
Over 400 people rallied in the small town to protest the murder of Jonathan Sanders.
So a white cop killed a black man because he intervened verbally on behalf of a white citizen that was in a situation with this cop.
Conveniently enough, the local cops don't use body cams OR even car cameras.
It seems that we are beyond any point of return with cops in America. Today I read about a woman who was illegally arrested, in her own home, while naked out of the shower in front of her own daughter. The cop retired before administrative actions could be taken, and a lawsuit is pending.
