What that means is that I'm too rich to qualify for Medicaid in my state and too poor to qualify for federal subsidies. The reason for that is because the Affordable Care Act, aka ObamaCare, was designed with the assumption that the Supreme Court would not issue a Supremely Assholish decision that said my state didn't have to expand Medicaid if they didn't want to.
Before I go on, let me clarify that in my state, if you have no dependent children, and if you have an income of $0 to $15k (more or less) a year, that makes you too rich to qualify for Medicaid. Since my successfully raised children are over 18, and since I make somewhere between $0 and $15k a year, I am disposable.
Those of us in my state who live in the Medicaid gap are getting further fucked. The reason we're getting further fucked is that the Fed was pumping money for health care into states like mine to give their state "governments" time to adjust and come up with their own plans. States like mine like to bitch and moan and bully people, but the last thing they can do is plan. When the shit was approaching the fan a month or two ago, the governor of my state appealed to the president to continue the funding even though there was no state plan to deal with me and my ilk, and not even a hint of one in the works.
The president, rightly, said "Fuck you."
So now here I am. The almost entirely federally funded state program that I relied on while my state blustered and bellowed is now unfunded. My state continues to refuse to take tax money I'VE ALREADY PAID to continue it. The program sucked on many levels, but at least it was something. Now I have practically no access to institutionalized healthcare.
If I have a problem that I think needs an antibiotic, I source my similarly circumstanced friends to see if any of them have a few left over in their medicine cabinets. Call it medical dumpster diving. I can assure you it's a thing.
I honestly don't know what the folks that have diabetes or high blood pressure or other easily controllable ailments are gonna do now that they can't access any care at all.
