This is part of the Cranky Users DK5 Meta Festival series. The point and purpose of this series, per Patriot Daily News Clearinghouse's diary "Cranky Users DK5 MetaFestival Time!" is:
to celebrate our community and DK while working on the specific purpose of providing constructive and respectful feedback on DK 5 beta, both features we like or dislike.
I originally signed on to discuss how DK5 impacted the Backyard Science group, especially as to templates ... The denizens of the Backyard Science group use various templates, and below the squiggle I'll show the problem with the way DK5 deals with ours. I've heard that templates don't work in DK5 and am a bit mystified because mine work, but not as expected. The real problem, it seems to me, boils down to the restrictions on what html codes will display in DK5. Anything you code elsewhere can be pasted into DK5 and some approved html will post and the rest won't. One thing DK5 does is kill color, which makes it hard to make things really stand out (unless you wish to go gigantic with the h2 tag, which comes out enormous in DK5.) Before I get to that, I will note that many members of our group use a ton of photos, and they are not pleased by the absence of lightbox and image sizing and repositioning. OceanDiver just wrote a piece dealing with the matter here: Cranky Users' DK5 Metafestival: Nature diaries. Since I am a point & shoot klutz who posts to and imports from Flickr, I can't address those problems, but The Daily Bucket is often photo heavy, and if the skilled photography types have problems with DK5, then Backyard Science has problems with DK5. I am competent to say that photos in comments probably shouldn't be so huge as they are in DK5. Backyard Science often has photos in comments and a string of the monsters that are the seemingly unavoidable default in DK5 would become tedious and even obnoxious, not to mention destructive of those with slow connections, slow processors, etc. IIRC the protocol on DK4 and prior was to keep photos in the 400 x 400 range to prevent those issues, and now, for those not using flickr or such that option is, I am told, gone. It seems that lightbos, which I am pretty unfamiliar with, connected to smaller photos, might be an improvement. RELATED DIARY: Cranky Users' DK5 Metafestival: Nature diaries OK, onwards!
This is my header on DK4 NOT! Won’t display in DK5
The Daily Bucket is a regular feature of the Backyard Science group. It is a place to note any observations you have made of the world around you. Insects, weather, meteorites, climate, birds and/or flowers. All are worthy additions to the bucket. Please let us know what is going on around you in a comment. Include, as close as is comfortable for you, where you are located. Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the patterns that are quietly unwinding around us. |

No color, flabby text spacing and just blah. I skipped the h2 Castro Valley, CA because h2 just doesn't cut it in DK5. I skipped the reference to the squiggle because there isn't one anymore. One solution I have tried is to use a screen capture converted to a .png file. This looks like: File removed — no big loss. Displays different now than it did then
This requires some sort of sandbox in which to post and display the original, however. Naturally, it would be preferable if it were a DK sandbox because that has the DK width parameters and such, but that would have the DK5 html restrictions. There is also a lower section that follows the actual diary content; in DK4: Doesn’t display properly in DK5

Not so dramatic and the spacer that was removed probably won't be needed, but can be replaced by a break or two. Here's a break

Here's another
Just as an illustration of what a string of comments with photos such as might occur in Backyard Science (or Birds and Birdwatching), go [http://www.dailykosbeta.com/stories/2015/7/17/1393067/-testing-tags#comment_56613233 here]. We're talking about one comment per screen (one and one-half or so, actually, but the 1/2 is worthless as is). I hope to simulpublish this to the Beta Site, replacing the squiggle with a Fnord, since Fnords do post oveDoesn’t display properly in DK5
