A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

When you were a kid, what was summertime fun for you?
We're in the midst of the dog days of summer. Weather is strange all over the country. Here were we live it's typical this time of year to have triple digit heat. It was 106+ yesterday and today it's supposed to top 108. This will end by the weekend however, which will be fine by me. Much of the country is experiencing a serious heatwave. As one tweet I read stated it, "The news channels are all having a circle jerk about the heatwave."
What do you do when it's so blazingly hot? I still do a bunch of stuff outdoors but have to tone it down between 1-4 PM. I'm lucky in that I do quite well in heat and actually don't mind it all that much. I can't say the same for others.
I remember what I did when I was a kid during the dog days of summer. I played outdoors. We all did all the time because there wasn't really thing else to do except read books. TV had a few shows kids liked, but not many, and those came on in the evening anyway (Gilligan's Island, McCale's Navy, Bewitched and Batman).
We played all manner of games and ran around during the day. Several times during the week we'd get a baseball game going during the day and kick the can in the evening. Some of us played soccer, but that was pretty rare back in the 1960's. Those of us who did like to run all the time thought soccer was perfect.
We went exploring and traipsing all over the place through all the fields, irrigation canals and inside the huge drainage tunnels which we called "the Time Zone." We rode our bikes everywhere all the time. They were sturdy, heavy bikes with no gears and we thought nothing of it. We'd ride them up and down huge hills which required quite a bit of strength building until you could do it. I honestly wonder what kind of X Game type of bike rider I'd have been had I'd been a kid in this day and age.
The actual bike I had as a kid. A red Schwinn Speedster
How about you? What did you do as a kid in the middle of summer? Your answer will really date you if you played outside.

Announcing Asheville, North Carolina as the location
for our next Regional Event! 9.26.15
Asheville, N.C. is the destination for September 26, 2015! DKos Asheville, the In-Real-Life group under the leadership of randallt, has been setting the example for other IRL groups across the nation regarding registering people to vote, getting out the vote, having a state open thread and setting up strategy conferences for their region. Because of this impressive leadership we've asked randallt to be the State Leader for all of North Carolina. We've got important work to do on the ground there and randallt has shown he's the person to make that happen.
All states are welcome to attend this event and if you do you can expect to meet Markos Moulitsas in person, as well as some of the Daily Kos staff. More details regarding this regional event will be shared in the future so please stay tuned to Connect! Unite! Act!
For now, SAVE THE DATE and spread the word!
