This is a thread for discussing how Sanders should have dealt with the protest in Seattle.
Ground rules: this is a place for brainstorming. That means people have to feel free to bring up off-the-wall ideas, so personal attacks of any kind are not welcome here. Go ahead and bring up the problems you see with other people's ideas. But do not in any way personalize that or question their motives. Outright racism will not be tolerated here, but if you see something you think seems covertly racist, please try to express the problems you see with it without calling anybody any names.
Everybody has a right to talk here; black, white, or other. But if you are white like me, realize that there are a lot more of us here on DKos. If there's 5 times as many white people, then each white person has to do 5 times more listening, and 5 times less talking, if we want to have a real dialogue. If you're white and you think you have something new to say, edit it twice, and then before you hit "post", use another tab to double check to see if anyone else has said it. On the other hand, if you're black, we do want to hear your ideas, so even if your idea isn't fully formed, please feel especially free to post it.
This is not a place for discussing whether or not the protestors were acting productively. It's only for discussing how Sanders and his team should have responded in that moment.
Please try to avoid suggestions that are impossible ("Bernie should have made an hour-long extemporaneous speech all about what it's like to be black in America, with a well-formed 12-point concrete plan about how to address the issue"; or, "Security should have quietly shut the protestors up, without creating any negative photo possibilities by manhandling them"). Please also try to consider how your suggestion would look to various constituencies. If you see obvious issues with your idea, that's OK, but it would be better to mention them yourself rather than just hope nobody else notices.
Thanks!
