This Sunday we were expecting a diary by Besame, but something unexpected came up and she reschedule her diary for 6 Sept. In it's place we are declaring Open Thread.
KosAbility is a Sunday 7 pm East Coast/4 pm West Coast volunteer diarist community of, by & for people living with disabilities, who love someone with a disability, or who want to know more about the issues. Our use of "disability" includes temporary as well as permanent health/medical conditions, and small, gnawing problems as well as major, life-threatening ones. Our use of "love someone" extends to cherished members of other species.
Our discussions are open threads in the context of this community. Feel free to comment on the diary topic, ask questions of the diarist or generally to everyone, share something you've learned, tell bad jokes, post photos, or rage about your situation. Our only rule is to be kind; trolls will be spayed or neutered.
If you are interested in contributing a diary, contact one of the Admin Team: Gwennedd, postmodernista, Besame, wilderness voice.

For many of us, music is an outlet to our moods, a balm to our feelings. We use music to celebrate, to inform, to meditate, to soothe our fractious children to sleep. It is an integral part of our lives, a window into our souls. It lifts us up and soothes us down.
Begin to charm, and as thou strok'st mine ears
With thine enchantment, melt me into tears.
Then let thy active hand scud o'er thy lyre,
And make my spirits frantic with the fire;
That done, sink down into a silvery strain,
And make me smooth as balm and oil again
To Music by Robert Herrick

Mankind has been making music for over 40,000 years. The earliest musical instrument, a bone flute with five finger holes, was found in a cave at Hohle Fels in Germany and dates back to 42,000 years ago. It is quite likely that we began to sing even before that time. Mothers would soothe and rock their children to repetitious sounds.
Since those very early times, mankind used music to help tell stories, adding to the suspense or conjuring the sounds of animals and birds from their instruments. They used music to enthrall their audience as we still do today.
One of our main uses for music is to evoke emotion. We thrill to the sound of blaring trumpets and banging drums, we cry at the sweet notes of violins and flutes. Music has the power to soothe us when we are overwrought with strong emotions and make us calm again.
What music do you listen to that make you feel better and restores your calm?
I'm a hearing impaired lady of a certain age. I grew up in Wales, and moved to Vancouver Island when I was 12. As an adult, I spent many years living in sawmill and mining towns in the interior of BC. I worked as a self-employed seamstress to supplement my disability stipend while my children were growing up. I currently live on Vancouver Island where I indulge my creative bent. I work in several media, and recently discovered weaving with fabrics, beads, glass and metals. I enjoy singing, belly dancing, gardening and carpentry.
