There are not a lot of profiles in courage among Kentucky politicians with regards to Little Miss Bigot Kim Davis and her Joan of Arc routine. Judge Bunning and Rowan County Attorney Harvey are the best examples of people with political courage. Most Kentucky politicos are pandering to the bigots or shitting themselves. Panderer in Chief is U.S. Senator Rand Paul, and a man who needs to change his pants is Speaker of the State House Greg Stumbo, a so called Democrat. Stumbo has echoed the call from Republicans that Governor Beshear needs to call a special session of the state legislature to address the burning issue that Kim Davis has raised. To his credit, Beshear has refused to do so, and his moves on Kim Davis should tell you that Little Miss Bigot's play will not pan out well.
While I am critical of Beshear on some issues, he is an astute Kentucky politician. Beshear understands how the rednecks in Kentucky think. Beshear knew that the rednecks would never accept the ACA unless he set up a state exchange and called it something else: kynect. And to his credit, he has managed to get over 500,000 Kentuckians health insurance. To this day, most Kentuckians are not aware that kynect and the ACA are the same thing. Otherwise, many would never have signed up because, well, Obama had something to do with it.
And Beshear is not above pandering to the rednecks either. While running for reelection, Beshear approved taxpayer subsidies to the Noah's Ark Theme Park. This made Kentucky a laughing stock in the nation, but the fundamentalist in Kentucky loved it. After the election, Beshear discovered that the con artist Ken Ham would only hire Christians for his theme park, so Kentucky pulled the funding.
The latest pander was to the anti-gay bigots. Beshear sent a lawyer to the Supreme Court to make defend Kentucky's ban on gay marriage. Thankfully, Beshear lost his case. Afterwards, Beshear threw in the towel and has ordered all county clerks to follow the ruling of the Supreme Court.
Now, we have Joan of Rowan County making her stand against gay couples. Beshear let the courts speak on her defiance because there was not much he could do seeing as she is an elected official. And Beshear has made a cogent argument for not helping Joan of Rowan out of her hole. He has said that 117 out of 120 county clerks are complying with the law, so why should the state of Kentucky spend over $100,000 dollars on a special legislative session to help three assholes out? The legislature will meet in January, and they can discuss this pressing issue then.
The other Democrats in this state need to listen to Beshear on this issue.
