We believe in many of the same things.
My partner is a devout Catholic and a socialist, when questioned she sees no conflict of interest whatsoever. She thinks her own church is wrong on some issues because of the fallibility of its leaders and not the words of Jesus Christ. She also ignores the Old Testament because as she says as a Christian, it is the words of Jesus that give the final interpretation to God's will. The Beatitudes she says, says it all;
Sermon on the Mount
Blessed are
...the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven. (5:3)
....those who mourn: for they will be comforted. (5:4)
....the meek: for they will inherit the earth. (5:5)
....those who hunger and thirst for righteousness: for they will be filled. (5:6)
....the merciful: for they will be shown mercy. (5:7)
....the pure in heart: for they will see God. (5:8)
....the peacemakers: for they will be called children of God. (5:9)
....those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Sermon on the Plain
Blessed are
..who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.
...who hunger now, for you will be satisfied.
...who weep now, for you will laugh.
...when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of man.
The four woes
Woe to you
...who are rich, for you have already received your comfort
...who are well fed now, for you will go hungry.
...who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.
...when everyone speaks well of you, for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.

What we used to argue about was the source of these words, we agreed to disagree a long time ago, where we do agree, is far more important.
On Government:
And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's. And they marveled at him Mark 12:17
Basically drawing the distinction between Government and Religion, not one and the same. Now ML says what belongs to God is her faith, nothing more, nothing less and to have faith one must love.
I regard Jesus as a philosopher the same as I regard Buddha, I'm a Buddhist, but I say their words are thoroughly human with no god involved.
Once we leave the religious stuff behind there is so much we agree upon, the really important stuff, love and understanding, justice and equality.
He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. 1 John 4:8
What is love?
Without love there is nothing.
And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not love, I am nothing. 1 Corinthians 13:2
Now some might argue that a Catholic is not an evangelical, a Catholic might argue that is the very essence of being a Catholic.
I would say as a socialist I have more belief in the words of the new testament than most of the preachers spewing hatred and fear. They know not love.
Love first, everything else will follow.
Just a thought.
