I will.
I hope it's Hillary Clinton, but I will support anyone who wins the nomination. Period.
Because anyone who wins the Democratic nomination will actually consider the findings of reputable scientists and economists and sociologists and other people who actually know shit vs. Rush Limbaugh and Alex Jones and assorted crazy-assed bigoted preachers who shape the positions of Republicans.
Because any Democratic nominee understands that responsible foreign policy depends on more than bluster and bullying.
Because any Democratic nominee will defend my equal citizenship as a gay woman rather than demonize me and try to shove me back into the closet.
Because any Democratic nominee will do far more to address the inequalities still and for too-long endured by non-white Americans instead of resorting to the vile, racist put-downs and conspiracy theories espoused on FoxNews and elsewhere on the right.
Because any Democratic nominee will push for a path to citizenship for undocumented workers vs. vilifying them as criminals and revving up bigoted crowds by shouting that they must be deported in droves and kept behind a "big, beautiful wall!"
Because any Democratic nominee will work to make college more affordable, improve health care access, and invest in infrastructure--provided we give him or her enough progressive Democrats in Congress to push through policies that will help the middle class and poor.
And so fucking on.
I am sick to death of the inner-party partisanship that has taken a nasty and destructive turn here. I saw what this sort of silliness did in 08. I lost friends over it--both Obama-supporters who hated Hillary and her supporters and Hillary-supporters who hated Obama and his.
And we see where that all ended up, right? Obama won the nomination--though Hillary actually won almost as many popular votes, especially in the last two months. And despite predictions that Hillary would fight all the way to the convention because she is such an evil cackling bitch, she conceded, campaigned for Obama, gave him a rousing endorsement at the convention and served as his Secretary of State. Imagine that!
And Obama, who was supposed to be the most progressive president since ever in America's history was mired down with an obstructionist Congress--including some conservative members of his own damned party. He wasn't really free until after he was re-elected, shelved the "post-partisan-unity" business, and started hitting the GOP back hard. (Many props and much love to second-term Obama.)
Political realities are political realities. Your candidate--Bernie or Hillary or Biden--cannot single-handedly deliver on a laundry-list of progressive goals for our country.
But any one of them sure as shit will do MUCH more toward that end than the reactionary know-nothings in today's GOP.
Please bear that in mind.
Please don't listen to people who try to convince you that the other Democratic nominee--the one you hope doesn't win the nomination--is pure fucking evil.
Why? See above list of "becauses."
Unless you are a total idiot, you will need to be prepared to vote for any Democratic nominee.
Advocate like hell for your guy or your gal, but do not fall into the trap of thinking that your candidate's opponent is as bad as a Republican.
Keep the big picture in mind. Please.
Thank you. End of rant.
