The Vatican on Wednesday confirmed that controversial Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis met with Pope Francis on Thursday during his U.S. visit.
Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said he would not deny that the meeting took place, but declined further comment.
Ms. Davis was in D.C. for the Value Voters Summit.
This totally reinforces my diary posted on Monday.

“During the meeting Pope Francis said, ‘Thank you for your courage,'” according to the press release. “Pope Francis also told Kim Davis, ‘Stay strong.’ He held out his hands and asked Kim to pray for him. Kim held his hands and said, ‘I will. Please pray for me,’ and the Pope said he would. The two embraced.”
Thank you for your courage??
Again, the Pope butting into our civil rights, and not only conflating Ms. Davis refusal to do her rather simple job, but also more or less giving his approval of her discriminating against same sex couples-- can potentially do major damage to couples demanding their rights.
As I pointed out in my Monday diary, there is pending litigation in several states-- religious bigots are suing to be allowed to discriminate based on their "religious beliefs". The Pope's approval of Ms. Davis' actions gives other bigots more credibility than they deserve.
The Vatican refusing to state the meeting didn't happen of course means it did happen. So let's dispense with the silly dancing/denial regarding the meeting.
The Pope meeting Ms. Davis is no surprise to those of us who never bought into Bloggo world fawning and accolades for the "new" Pope.
