(Written 10/02/15 for 10/03 publication while I am judging the first of two days of Nose Work Trials.)
Yesterday I spent the morning at the PADS center and an hour of that working with an employment volunteer. Later in the morning, actually after lunch, I was able to take a shower.
When I finished I saw several clients who hadn't been there before my shower. Two of those were Heather and her boyfriend.
They became homeless soon after I did, but without a vehicle they were wheeling their belongings behind them in large suitcases - and hefting them onto buses and trains. Then they got lockers at the center, and were able to stow the suitcases for awhile.
Heather is hilarious. She has a great sense of humor and a better sense of sarcasm. She would fit right into my family. Plus, she is "feeling the bern." How cool could she be?
Even cooler than that. Her suitcase included Jeremy, a pillow penguin and Dave, a minion. Plus, when she had a couple extra dollars she picked up a friend for Dave: one eyed Stuart. I love that!
It is healthy to be around someone as upbeat as Heather. I learned today that they have been given a fantastic opportunity: they leave tomorrow at 3 pm for Albuquerque.
Our loss is Albuquerque's gain. I'm just happy that I was able to hug Heather one last time, and that I have her email address to be able to keep in touch.
For you Kossack's in Albuquerque, be on the lookout for a fantastically sarcastic, funny lady with very short snd very red hair, and a very handsome looking guy with short dark hair nearby. She be crazy, but in the best was possible. Chicago's winter is going to be colder, longer and lonelier because they are gone.
Good luck, my friends.
