Welcome to Sunday Brunch. This is an open topic thread so help yourself to the goodies and sit a spell and let us know what is new with you. Ever since I was a child I have been fascinated by outer space and the thought of other life out there. Currently there is a lot of speculation that the Kepler telescope might possibly be able to detect an alien superstructure in space. What would this mean to Earth if something like this is discovered?
One of the most distressing things about the current campaigns from around the world is the intense xenophobia from around the world. The refuge crisis where a Hungarian photographer is suing the refuge father she tripped up because of the hatred expressed towards her on the media is just one such example. Donald Trump wants to build a wall between us and Mexico. How would these people deal with another civilization that is far advanced from us?
The way I see it there are three different scenarios that could occur in outer space. Scenario number one is that we are alone and there are no other life forms out there. That seems by far the most unlikely of the situations. With a universe this big is just seems to be a colossal waste of everything if we are it. Just us? Is that a legacy we really want a planet that fights constantly with everyone? A planet determined to destroy its ecosystem? A planet boiling over with petty prejudice? No that can't be it.
The second scenario would be there are other cultures out there that are not any further along the evolutionary process then ourselves. We don't know about them and they don't know about us. This would make sense since there are parts of the know universe the same age as ourselves. We could be on parallel tracks and the more we learn the closer we come to finding out if there are other civilizations like us. Maybe by the time we both mature we will have figured out how not to destroy ourselves and others.
The third scenario may actually go along with number two and that is there are civilizations vastly superior to ours. They know all about us but are holding off contact to see if we will be able to mature enough to not destroy ourselves. If we can't make peace on this planet there would be no hope of joining other civilizations in any meaningful sort of way. If you want to take a darker view maybe the other civilizations don't think we are worth the trouble of destroying. They are just going to sit back and let us do ourselves in.
My hope is two and three with more peaceful civilizations that we can learn from. What about you?
