New York Times/CBS poll demonstrates the lunacy of the Republican obsession with continually demonizing undocumented immigrants—a tactic that's sure to doom GOP hopes in the general election.
Among registered Republicans, a plurality—42 percent—think the undocumented should be able to "stay and apply for citizenship." Another 15 percent say they should be able to "stay in the U.S. legally," which means fully 57 percent support the undocumented staying in the U.S. in some capacity.
But here's the kicker: Just 38 percent of Republicans support requiring the undocumented to "leave." While it's shocking that anyone even thinks that's an option, it still demonstrates that the GOP —both in the presidential race and in Congress—has been entirely alienating one of the fastest-growing voting populations in the nation in order to appease a minority of its base.
Way to go, GOP! Angle toward the least reasonable and collectively smallest elements of your base during the primary while simultaneously killing your chances in the general election.
Now that's the Republican party we've come to know and love.
