Bernie Sanders supporters to like criticize Hillary Clinton because they believe she is not ideologically pure enough. She is criticized for changing her political views over time. They accuse her of doing so based on poll numbers. I would like to remind them that the President of the United States represents ALL Americans, including those with different political views. In that sense, public opinion does matter.
Hillary is criticized for her past opposition to gay marriage. I would like to remind everyone that public opinion has changed over time on this issue. I makes sense that a politician might change their opinion over time as well.
I am a Lesbian and I support Hillary Clinton for President. I admire people who can take in new information and form new opinions. I am afraid that the Bernie Sanders true believers will bail out on Hillary in the general election if she wins the nomination.
Sanders supporters tell me their is no difference between Republicans and Democrats. That might seem true to you if you benefit from Heterosexual Privilege. Barrack Obama (who I supported in the 2008 primary), appointed 2 Supreme Court Justices. If John McCain or Mitt Romney had made these appointments I can guarantee that the Supreme Court would have made a different decision on marriage equality. Supreme Court decisions effect the lives of the LGBT community.
If you are heterosexual you have the luxury of voting based on ideological purity. If a Republican becomes President you don't need to worry about future Supreme Court decisions affecting your right to marry.
We are currently paying for the Supreme Court appointments made by Nixon, Ford, Reagan and Bush. They brought us Citizens United. You need to think twice before you abandon the Democrats in the general election.
