Happy Hallowe’en! Have a fun time on the day. My sister used to love to dress up to give out candy. I miss her. She would call me and tell me what outfit she had found or made to wear. I still have the pumpkin costume she wore the last year. We used to dress up and go to the Renaissance Faire every year, too.
Please fill in the blanks and paste your version below or make up your own story. You may change words as needed and make longer phrases where the blanks are.

Evie looked into the mirror at the stroke of midnight. In the town below she heard the _______ and the chapel bell clock chiming. He is coming. She tugged at the huge jewel she wore around her neck. It identified her as the _____ for the year. Not a sacrifice, no that was from the dark ages, not a lover, yet. But the one who would usher in the long nights as ________.
She smiled at herself and then frowned. Something was wrong. The mirror was _________. She couldn’t see herself. Behind her in the mirror she could see a shadow…huge, grotesque, a giant masked man moving toward her. He had arrived silently. Wings unfurled. This was nightmare. This couldn’t be happening. This was supposed to be a game!
She heard a voice inside her head. “______________________.”
“No!”
When the sun appeared, the house on the hill was _____. The ballroom showed signs of dancers, masks dropped, drinks spilled, autumn leaves tracked inside, but ________. Only a huge jewel lay on the floor. The trustee who brought in the cleaners searched the whole house, but there was no one to be found. Only a mirror stood at the end of the hall.
What would return to the house next year? The trustee shuddered and left the cleaners to work.
