Like many of you, I live on a small income, and like many of you, I have some things I do to save money. I have to. I have enough income to pay for my home, food and electricity, but if I want to have internet and a phone, I have to save some money somewhere. I save some by bundling those services, but I do other things to save money, too. I food shop carefully and make large meals ahead of time and freeze portions; I use a bus for transport, walk and get rides with friends. And over the years, I've found some other ways to save a buck that others might think of as weird. Wander below the blue box to learn more.
KosAbility is a Sunday 7 pm East Coast/4 pm West Coast volunteer diarist community of, by & for people living with disabilities, who love someone with a disability, or who want to know more about the issues. Our use of "disability" includes temporary as well as permanent health/medical conditions, and small, gnawing problems as well as major, life-threatening ones. Our use of "love someone" extends to cherished members of other species.
Our discussions are open threads in the context of this community. Feel free to comment on the diary topic, ask questions of the diarist or generally to everyone, share something you've learned, tell bad jokes, post photos, or rage about your situation. Our only rule is to be kind; trolls will be spayed or neutered.
If you are interested in contributing a diary, contact one of the Admin Team: Gwennedd, postmodernista, Besame, wilderness voice.

~ At night I unplug my microwave and TV. Some things that vampire electricity (use a minimal amount of electricity even when not in use) can be unplugged for the night. I won't unplug my modem or TV box though, because they need to stay connected.
~ I cut my own hair and that saves me at least $20 every two months.
~ I often split a large purchase of some food item with a friend. It's cheaper to buy in bulk and we split the cost, so it's even cheaper.
~ I grow my own veggies and freeze or can the excess. I pick fruit from the hedgerows and unclaimed trees and make jams or jellies.
~ I'm a great trash to treasure scavenger. I pick up unused lumber and things people want to throw out and make use of it as garden art or somesuch. Sometimes things just need a minor repair and a paint job.
~ I use a toaster oven to bake and cook much of my food. That save the expense of using my stove's regular oven (it also keeps my oven nice and clean, thus saving the cost of oven cleaners).
What weird things do you do to save some money? HERE are a few pointers that may help.
I'm a hearing impaired lady of a certain age. I grew up in Wales, and moved to Vancouver Island when I was 12. As an adult, I spent many years living in sawmill and mining towns in the interior of BC. I worked as a self-employed seamstress to supplement my disability stipend while my children were growing up. I currently live on Vancouver Island where I indulge my creative bent. I work in several media, and recently discovered weaving with fabrics, beads, glass and metals. I enjoy singing, belly dancing, gardening and carpentry.
